Arrest Driver After Accident Near Earlton

John Moran 65 of Earlton was charged by the Highway Patrol with driving while intoxicated reckless driving and leaving the scene after a collision west of Earlton about 6 p.m. Moran’s 1950 Mercury swerved into a ditch crossed the highway and nearly hit Ross Cooper’s 1958 Buick. Moran was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital. Cooper’s car suffered $500 damage and Moran’s car was a total loss.

Weather relief as storms cool Kansas temperatures

Overnight storms brought relief from heat and humidity in Kansas. Temperatures Monday reached around 100 in many areas, with Manhattan at 104 and Goodland at 94. Overnight lows included 65 at Goodland and 76 at Hutchinson. forecasters expect partly cloudy skies and scattered storms through Wednesday with highs near 90 and lower night temperatures.

Erie Pool Bonds Election Today

Voters in Erie head to the polls for a special bond election on a proposed $40,000 swimming pool. Last year the plan failed. Polls run from 8 am to 6 pm. If approved the tax levy would rise about $4 per $1,000 valuation.

Erie Reunion Kicks Off Five Day 87th Soldiers and Sailors Event

The five day 87th Soldiers and Sailors Reunion begins with a free courthouse lawn concert 7:30 to 8 and a dance 9 to 12 in Wilson Hall with Mike Parise and his band from Columbus. Tomorrow features Neosho Valley Golden Clippers Saddle Club at 8 and a Pittsburg group. accordionists from Iola perform Thursday. Friday brings the bean feed at 6 with 1000 pounds of beans and bacon overseen by the American Legion Auxiliary, followed by KOAM TV entertainers Shorty Pruitt. A Friday 9 pm dance features Bobby Jones’ band from Humboldt, with Saturday closing dances, amateur hour, prize awards by the American Legion, and Wayne Brillhart’s Erie orchestra.

Traffic Crash Fatal To Two Women

Two wheat harvest workers wives died in a two car crash on a Wallace County county road about 25 miles southwest of Goodland. The victims were Mrs. Cynthia Hall 18 Perryton Texas and Mrs. Naomi Bright 30 Hydro Oklahoma.

Chanute City Board Tackles Zoning and Firework Plans

City commissioners approved changes to the zoning ordinance to classify beauty parlors as home occupations and set a hearing for Aug 12 on James H. Taylor Jr.'s rezoning to B-2 for a wholesale fireworks business. They also passed an emergency measure funding a new fire truck and moved to restrict minors in beer-selling taverns. The board discussed storm warning system costs, issued three beer licenses, addressed street repairs for a 1300 block delegation, and considered use of a permanent council meeting room. A study of the power plant was suggested but no action taken. Howard Parsons gave the invocation.

Two Men Held Here On Check Charges

Two out of state men were arrested on forged check charges after attempts to cash bad checks in Olson s Supermarket and Donaldson s Grocery. Craig Cooley of Oklahoma and James John of California were taken to Chanute police jail. John escaped but later re arrested. Police pursue a separate forged check case and describe the suspects driving away in a yellow pickup truck.

Unemployment Rises as June Labormarket Expands to Record

Washington AP reports June saw unemployment rise to 5.5 percent with total employment reaching a record 68,579,000 as 1.4 million more people found work. Civilian labor force up 2.3 million. over half jobless aged 14 to 24. factory week at 40 hours.

Man Beaten To Death Near Yukon Oklahoma

The battered body of Dan W. Simms 28 of Worthington Pa was found in a ditch near Yukon Oklahoma. Police traced the victim to a 1960 car abandoned on U S 66 with bloodstains and $300 in travelers checks but no luggage. Simms telephone call said he was returning home with $600 in traveler's checks.

World War I veterans met Monday night at the Humboldt Legion Hall. Speaker John Uhren Cha nute Barracks No. 1963 commander along with J. E. Vance and Jack Owens explained the group’s purpose. The chapter admitted eight new members.
