A giant red radish 15 inches around and 7 inches long was grown by Huo Larson of 1409 W Main. The crop produced edible-size radishes earlier but this one is past that stage. In Erie the probate judge Louis Eaton reported no marriage licenses issued in the past week, though the halt is not expected to last.
Walter Sheets and his wife Nancy Ann staged a divorce to ease reenlistment into the Marine Corps but a judge vacated the decree for fraud and officials said the four dependent rule does not apply to sergeants. Sheets said he would inform Nancy Ann.
Washington P sources report the government announced a 1956 Operation Alert combined with military maneuvers. plans include establishing permanently staffed relocation centers for federal agency use in an H bomb assault.
Los Angeles area announces a Pet Health Plan for household pets covering hospital care medical and surgical treatment for dogs and cats. Enrollment costs 20 dollars per year and includes access to twenty veterinary clinics.
Prisoners left cells as guards moved in under Warden Lawrence Delmore Jr to secure each block. About 1,700 inmates were searched after hostages were freed and a nine point pact was signed with revolt leaders, with prosecutors warning of prosecutions.
Washington reports the United States accepted Russia's offer to pay half the damages from the June 23 shooting down of a Navy Neptune patrol plane over international waters. Seven of eleven crew were injured. no fatalities. Navy cost estimate for the plane alone cited at about 1.4 million dollars. total bill undisclosed. The State Department urged broader Soviet safety measures.
Erie The Neosho Valley Co operative Creamery is expanding with clearing of south lots for a larger fireproof warehouse. Carr Hubbard of Carthage Mo holds the contract. The project includes converting Fourth and Main garage space into an egg plant with a large cooler to meet state egg handling rules. G C Freely says some eggs will be graded locally. previously grading was done outside the state.
State Accident Records Section reports 24 hour traffic fatalities rising to 1, year to date 1955 shows 272 deaths while the same period in 1954 recorded 264 deaths, reflecting a higher year progress in Topekamps Kansas.
A gala swim show at the municipal pool marks the official close of the American Red Cross Swimming school in Neosho County. The 6:15 p.m. event features a Little Red Riding Hood water pageant, age-group races, life saving demonstrations, and advanced swimming displays. About 700 enrolled, with 60 turned away due to space and instructor limits. registration was open for three days.
The Tribune received 1884 entries this week a drop from last week's 2557. Prize stands at 120 dollars for the correct solution. Results and puzzle No 11 will appear tomorrow. Deadline is 5 p.m. each week and entries must arrive at the Tribune office by then.
Fred Cox 67 was reported missing from his home at 632 S. Katy and found resting in roadside shade northwest of Earlton about 2 40 p m Wednesday. About 20 Boy Scouts helped in the search led by R D Hamar and Bill Slane. Sheriff Lee Montgomery with Undersheriff John Phelps and Chanute patrolman Clifford McCoy supervised the hunt. McCoy said Cox was found by Phelps three and a half miles north and two miles west of Earlton. He did not recall leaving his home and was in good condition when found. The description had been broadcast across southeast Kansas.
County figures show Neosho license revenue climbing from 1953-54 to the year ending June 30. Resident fishing led gains with an $888 increase while non resident hunting fell $95. Trapping and several non resident categories declined or rose modestly. Quail stamps also increased.
A Colorado Springs family faces up to 22 700 wrong number calls after the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Association sent brochures with an unrelated number instead of the rodeo office. Officials said the issue surfaced when Clare W Kings home line started ringing. The Kings plan to be away from home much of the time.
Congress passed a $3,285,800,000 foreign aid bill and sent it to President Eisenhower. The Senate approved by voice vote and the House followed an hour later with a 26 to 120 roll call.

Roy William Savage aged 56 of Sedan Kansas died when his car left U S 166 a mile west of Peru. The vehicle overturned and Savage was pinned in the wreckage following the crash last night.
The House Labor Committee approved a plan by a 21 to 9 vote to raise the federal minimum wage from 75 cents to one dollar an hour, effective next March 1.
City spraying operated to kill flies when weather allows. alleys in the business district sprayed Tuesday night and again this morning. City Manager Ross Cooper says the spray also reduces mosquitoes but their population remains high due to rainy conditions and new crops along creeks and the river blowing in with the wind.
Gov Fred Hall filled two medical board seats in Topeka replacing Dr O W Davidson and Dr Murray Co Eddy. Davidson’s term expired and Eddy’s term ended. Williamson and Eddy were affected by the governor to avoid conflicts with other state roles. Additional appointments included Kabler and Dickleman to the Advisory Laboratory Council and Durland and Maloney to the State Board of Engineering Examiners.
Mrs Frances S Bera piloting an AeroDuct plane won the 2800 mile Powder Puff Derby from Long Beach to Springfield Mass with a Cessna 180. Copilot was her sister Edna Bower of Long Beach and prize money totaled 800 dollars. She set a Derby speed record and won most stretch prizes amid 47 entrants and 36 finishers. Awards will be given in Springfield with her visiting Chanute later.
The board voted to close one hour earlier in July and August, setting 5 p.m. on weekdays instead of 6 p.m. They discussed hiring a replacement for Mrs. Pearl Hallenberg, who resigns Sept. 1 and is aiding a search. Raymond Pierpont presided. other members present included Mrs. George Lightfoot, Mrs. Bruce Burris, George Donaldson, and H. G. Curl.

The bruised body of 8 year old Mary Manzo was found today on a South Side sidewalk under a viaduct after she had been missing since Monday. Coroner McCarren called the death a sex case and said the injuries indicated torture. Her mother Lucy Man s20, 28, had sent her to a drug store with 25 cents to buy a nipple. Mary's shoes socks and underwear were missing and her dress was rumpled.
Volunteer donors produced 238 pints over a two day Red Cross collection at the Memorial Building. Tuesday's take was 102 pints and Wednesday 136 pints, with a goal of 300 pints. Recruitment chair Mrs. Don R. Abbuehl praised the response despite heat vacations and a holiday period. Two donors received awards. John Gray Jr. of rural Chanute got a beverage cooler from Pioneer Appliance Co. and Ruth Shannon of Chanute received flowers from Chanute Greenhouse. Sixteen donors joined the "One Gallon Club" for eight pints or more, including Francis Lee Savonburg and several from Chanute and nearby towns.
Eureka 20 year old Raymond Hadley Barker died in a collision six miles south of El Dorado Kansas on Highway 54 when his car struck a semi trailer. William Lanting 52 of Kansas City Kansas suffered cuts and bruises as the truck driver. Barker’s death was Butler County’s eighth traffic fatality of the year.
The forecast shows a weak cool front entering Kansas from the northwest bringing slightly lower temps and possible showers. Highs reach mid 90s southeast, 85 northwest, with more scattered storms in central and eastern areas tonight into Friday. River stages near bankfull at La Cygne and Trading Post after Tuesday rains.
The annual Erie creamery picnic on the courthouse lawn drew about 3000 people from nine southeast Kansas counties. G C Freeley called it the biggest in six years with 21000 free concession rides for children from 10 a m to 10 p m. The Erie Chamber aided with free ice cream for children and iced tea for all.
