Dr. Richard W. Good and his wife and two children have moved to 307 S Lafayette Chanute. He will open a dental office at 301 S Allen around August 1 after renovations. He recently graduated from Kansas City Western Dental College and chose Chanute for its cleanliness and progress.
Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas shows improvement from a heart attack but remains in serious condition at the Mayo Clinic. Doctors say it could be six months before it is known if he can resume leadership duties or engage in strenuous campaigning.
TOPEKA Kansas officials announce red reflector stop signs with silver lettering will replace the familiar black on yellow highway signs as the old signs wear out. Claud R McCamment state highway department traffic director notes the new signs are already in use on some city streets and will replace highway signs as they wear.
Police report says Jerry L. Griffith of 627 St. Santa Fe was to receive a police court hearing at 4 p.m. today on charges of operating a motor car while intoxicated and reckless driving. Officers arrested him after finding his car with a wheel over a curb near Fourth and Santa Fe last night.
John Kerwitz placed third in the national Key Club oratorical contest at the twelve annual Detroit convention. He is son of Mr and Mrs C G Kerwitz and plans to study law at Kansas University this fall after winning the district title with "Vandalism, a Challenge to Youth." He was accompanied by Richard Schultz as the convention continued.
The northeast and east central Kansas regions face heavy rains from unstable warm moist air. Overnight totals approach four inches in some east central zones with potential flooding in small streams in southern Johnson and northern Miami counties. Thunderstorms are possible tonight and tomorrow, with clearing skies and hot temperatures expected later.
TOPEKA P Robe rt Paul Fultz 19 Altamont died in a Topeka hospital yesterday from injuries after a 50 foot fall from a Kansas River bridge project at Willard where he was employed.
Application forms for new driver's licenses have been received here, Billy R. Coats, authorized agent for the permits, said today. Both Coats and Paul T. Brennecke are handling the applications this year. The licensing division had announced that distribution of the permits was not expected to be completed before July 11. The old permits expired June 30.
After 14 hours of questioning, law student John R. Crocker Jr. confessed to beating, stabbing, and strangling Norma Mec Cauley, a wealthy Bel Air divorcee, in her bedroom yesterday. Crocker, 31, a former houseboy in Cauley’s home, claimed she rejected his love and humiliated him by falling asleep during his talk.
A two car crash near Belle Plaine left 92 year old Rock, Kansas farmer Ulys ses Edward Sims dead and another person injured. The accident occurred about a mile east of Belle Plaine late last night on the Wellington road.
Neosho County total tangible property value rises to 30,629,799 dollars, up 47,220 from 1954. City valuations climb to 11,104,872 with Chanute up 90,483, while rural valuations fall by 70,192 to 19,524,927. Public utilities rise 62,645 to 6,280,004.
The Senate approved 2.8 million dollars to begin construction on the Toronto flood control dam on the Verdigris River in Woodson County and a 25 thousand dollar planning fund for the Strawn reservoir on the upper Neosho River. Also 712 million was approved to resume work on the Tuttle Creek dam near Manhattan.
The Army asked to take over Sunflower Village in Eudora Kansas for military use. Public Housing Administration officials said an informal request from the Regional Real Property Division was received and a formal request is expected later. Sunflower Village consists of 977 units built in World War I for defense workers and their families.
In Detroit a PA 99 year old girl wearing a wet bathing suit was electrocuted when she opened a self serve freezer in a dairy store. Sharon Kirn and a playmate were summoned from a backyard swimming pool to run an errand for Sharon's mother Grace.
In Sheboygan Wisconsin a peace talk on the 15 month old UAW CIO strike against Kohler Co. collapsed when Kohler representatives walked out accusing the mayor of a publicity stunt. The meeting attended by union and company officials and Mayor Rudolph Ploetz followed a mob incident at the docks with damage to property and a nonstriking worker beaten.
The Board of Education discussed a tentative 1955 56 budget proposing a 29.59 mill levy to fund operation of the city school system. Supt. Buford Fisher presented the brief outline and announced a detailed review and a public hearing set for August 1. He warned that state aid funds, about 5101 000, depend on uncertain legislation and that operating costs will rise with social security coverage and higher salaries. Additional items include a new gym floor at Royster, folding chairs, remodeling plans for the Senior High home economics room, and policy on attendance at teachers meetings. The board approved granting past members free admission to activities.
Missing man Fred Cox, 67, of 632 South Katy, last seen Tuesday morning, prompted a south of Fourteenth Street Plummer Road search led by Sheriff Lee Montgomery and Cha nute patrolman Cliff McCoy with Bill Slane and R. D. Hamar directing scouts. Cox is 5 feet 7 inches, 135 pounds, brown hat and clothes, unmarried, brother Walter Cox asked for help, broadcasts sent to Southeast Kansas stations. In other news, a Crawford County ruling reversed on highway damage suits totaling 60,000, and Paul G Brennan of Wichita received a 15 year prison term for issuing a worthless check.
The Red Cross mobile unit and local volunteers collected 102 pints of blood yesterday. Mrs. Ann Hummer, executive secretary of the county Red Cross chapter, said today that efforts would continue to meet the 300 pint two day goal as the drive planned to end at 3 15 p m today.
The State Accident Records Section reports 2 traffic deaths in the last 24 hours and 271 to date in 1955, with 264 for the same period in 1954. One death from a June accident was not previously recorded.
ERIE Agreements between parties ended the Chanute picketing case in district court here today. The Local Union No 550 Parsons AFL would refrain from picketing the state tuberculosis hospital, the Kansas Highway Commission office in Chanute, and a Fredonia grade school project. Plaintiffs Hunter Lundberg of Manhattan and George Senne & Co. of Topeka agreed to seek dismissal and pay costs. Judge Dunham dismissed the action. The union had picketed since June 20 for all union labor at the Chanute sites until restraining orders halted protests pending hearing.
Washington officials report a 20 percent lag in Red China’s five year plan, seen as the gravest issue confronting the annual people’s congress underway at Peiping.
Kansas Supreme Court rules Parsons cannot deny pool privileges to a resident because of African descent. Justice Wertz notes the decision likely applies to other Kansas cities. Morton had sued, claiming denial of swimming access as a taxpayer. Both sides cited authorities, facts stipulated, and the court ordered admission to the Parsons pool.
