Simone Abboud, 40, French-born divorcee, says she has a breakthrough role as the first woman crew member on an American cargo vessel. She works as messwoman aboard the American Astronaut, a United States Lines container ship docked in Oakland en route to Asia, serving meals for 21 men and avoiding fraternizing.
Shell Oil fights to control four wild wells on an offshore platform after killing three fires. Well B-8 was extinguished 12,000 feet beneath the Gulf. B-21 and B-10 were capped earlier. Relief wells under way for four more wells amid minimal pollution.
In Leavenworth Kansas AP reports a work stoppage by inmates at the U S Penitentiary continued as Warden R I Moseley said staff are interviewing prisoners to learn the strike cause. The prison with about 2200 inmates operated on a minimal movement plan over the weekend with cells for most activities. Weekend movies and church services were canceled.
The Emporia city commission approved a 90000 general obligation bond issue to build Peter Pan pool beside Peter Pan Park. Construction to start in February with bids opened February 3 and completion hoped by late May. The pool was purchased from private owners with a 10000 gift from Dr and Mrs W L White, publishers of The Emporia Gazette.
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong artillery hit Phnom Penh's airport and pressed attacks along the capital's defense line. Explosions shook the city through the night as enemy troops occupied villages north of the airfield while U.S. cargo planes kept delivering arms.guards engaged in a night gun battle at the runway end. the force size was uncertain and retreated northward.
BBC rejects calls to ban smoking on television. A BBC spokesman argues viewers who smoke find appearing on TV unnerving and that television should reflect real life as people still smoke in real life.
Governor Robert Docking praised Chanute for becoming the state’s first community to file an official PRIDE entry. He commended citizen involvement in creating jobs, services, a higher living standard, and a better environment, saying Chanute can serve as a model for others.
In Kampala the army insurgents announce Obote has been deposed in his absence and power handed to soldiers after a morning of intense clashes. Maj Gen Idi Amin leads the rebel faction as Radio Uganda urges calm. Obote, 45, had been abroad at a Commonwealth summit in Singapore.
