Gov. Docking reappoints Thomas J. Griffith to the Kansas Board of Regents despite threats to his life and family. Griffith faces a misdemeanor clash over a conflict of interest law and was ordered to appear in Topeka court.
Gov. Robert Docking told the Kansas Livestock Association he will propose a lean budget by cutting nonessential items and luxuries. He cited reductions in filing cabinets travel and automobile purchases and noted he has kept budgets balanced with no tax increases during his four-year term. He will be sworn in Monday for a third term. In Clay Center sheriff Bill Gonser said a petition seeks to retain Harold Nye as director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and is circulating among Kansas peace officers.
Virgil L. Knoble, 27, of Chanute, died in an I 70 collision near Coatesville Indiana between a truck driven by Dean W. Bateman and a state highway department vehicle. Bateman and the highway driver were injured. Knoble and Bateman reportedly owned the truck and hauled for a Liberal meat firm. Knoble left Thursday with Bateman to pick up a load destined east of the crash site. He is survived by his widow Deborah Hud son and two daughters. Funeral Monday at 1 p.m. in Gibson Koch Chapel with burial in Beula Cemetery Crawford County.
AP reports a U.S. fighter bomber attacked an antiaircraft missile site in North Vietnam after the battery threatened B 52 bombers. officials say no missiles were fired. In Barbados a grounded cruise ship passengers fled by lifeboat to Mustique Island. Democrats criticize Nixon policies as unemployment hits 6 percent. Anwar Sadat accuses Israel of hindering the Jarring mission. Palestinian guerrillas clash with Jordanian forces in Amman. Susan Elaine Eisenhower wed British barrister Alexander Hugh Bradshaw in Gettysburg.
In San Clemente President Nixon turns 58 with a low key birthday at home. Press secretary Ziegler says he will dine quietly with Mrs Nixon, daughter Tricia, and family friend C G Rebozo.
In Lomita California a four door from home Alycia Hernandez fell into a 10 by 10 inch hole at a construction site. Her father Jose Hernandez a 28 year old road worker shouted encouragement promising a party when she turns three later this month. A rescue worker brought her to the surface Friday evening unharmed though crying with a soiled red sweater. Hundreds cheered as the child was saved after more than 50 hours.
