Chanute residents thaw out as temperatures rise from subzero levels. Cars start with ease and engines purr again amid forecasts for increasing cloudiness, warmer tonight, and a mild Wednesday with light drizzle, fog, and highs around 45 to 50.
A two story frame home owned by Chester Hale at 115 S Denman was badly damaged by a fire last night. Neighbors reported flames and firefighters arrived at 11 25 p m. A second fire at Dick McMinimy’s home west of Chanute caused minor damage. Fire crews also addressed a blaze at Olson Food Store and a prior large house and outbuildings fire near St Paul. The week of fires followed losses at a Moses farm west of Erie. Temperatures rose from a record low as ice and snow thawed slowly on roads.
During 1953 an exchange student from Brazil, Emer yk Krosnowski, stayed with the Reinhardts in rural Eric and later met Marjorie Roeckers of Richmond at a party in Paringa, South America. He plans to return to the United States to live and recalls discovering pie on his first Kansas visit.
In Havana the provisional government announced it will dissolve Congress and the criminal courts and rule by decree until free elections are held within 18 months to two years. Manuel Urrutia named Jose Miro Cardona premier and expanded the cabinet to 11.
Emporia Kansas hopes to reopen the Granada theater within three weeks after a January 1 fire. Fred Soutter of Fox Midwest Theaters said bids are being taken to replace stage flooring and repair a roof section damaged in the blaze.
Topeka Kansas traffic fatalities reported by the State Accident Records section show two deaths in the last 24 hours and nine to date in 1959 compared with nine deaths in the same period of 1958.
Charles M. Wallace aged 88, former mayor of Winfield, died at his Wichita home on Monday night. His death marks the passing of a longtime city official noted for public service and local leadership.
TOPEKA AP reports an outbreak of infectious hepatitis in Lawrence with sixteen cases. Dr. Geoffrey Martin notes a gamma globulin program for some Lawrence school classes to prevent or lessen effects if given early. He cites poor hygiene as a key spread factor and says this is Kansas' only outbreak with sporadic cases elsewhere.

The Chanute Board of Education approved contracts for two teachers to lead the new guidance program starting next fall. Robert Geiger and Kenneth Wilson will direct senior high and junior high guidance, as Wilson also serves as county juvenile counselor. The 1959-60 calendar was approved with Aug 28 enrollment and Aug 31 start, closing May 27, and a list of holidays. A salary comparison with other cities highlighted Chanute’s relatively low pay scales, prompting a February review of the salary schedule.
Nicolasa Conlucas, a San Luis Mexico immigrant working as a janitress in Los Angeles, used a 50-cent coin to start selling enchiladas. She sent money to 99 orphans and 33 destitute elders in Mexico, plus gifts to four prisoners, funding a growing charity effort with proceeds from her spare time. She praises Jesus for the Christmas generosity.
Four Britons started December 12 from the Canary Islands in a 47-foot balloon and a gondola lifeboat aiming for Barbados 3,000 miles away. They traveled 1,200 miles by air and 2,000 by sea, surviving on small rations as they drifted and later jettisoned gear to keep control.
Elbert Rinehart endured 44 hours of subzero weather to win car license number 1 at Crawford County Courthouse. He began Saturday noon on the steps, wore heavy clothing, and was aided by family with coffee. Temperatures dropped to 10 below zero as his brother and sisters received tag numbers 2 and 3. Meanwhile in Emporia the Army launches a $50,000 drive for a new building to replace the condemned citadel.
Chanute area banks report 1958 year end gains in deposits assets and loans. Combined Chanute banks First National Bank and Bank of Commerce show assets of 16.264 million up 1.423 million with deposits up 1.395 million and loans and discounts at 6.679 million up 37 thousand. Thayer and Stark State Bank also post asset and deposit increases with loans rising while capital remains unchanged. Stockholders meetings scheduled for the Bank of Commerce and First National Bank this week.
Two Savonburg youths Carl Cox and James Shoemaker 17 and 16 respectively face breaking and entering and larceny charges after a break-in at Eugene Lee garage Stark. Bond set at 1000 each with preliminary hearing January 14. They admitted to three additional thefts at Grant High School and to stealing gasoline antifreeze and vending coins.
A fire swept through a Martinsburg West Virginia nursing home killing four residents and injuring several others. Victims include operator Velma Stroop Smith and relatives Minnie Pence Virginia Blake and Frank Bowers. Fire started in the basement and spread up between walls in 6 degree cold.
A young construction worker named Wayne E. Barkley of Salina about 23 was killed when a large earth moving machine slid on ice and plunged into the Smoky Hill River at a dam in Salina. Barkley, driver of the machine, was working on a flood control project. his widow and father, both of Salina, survive him.
A milk truck and a 1956 Chevrolet driven by Floyd Jobe collided around 6:40 a.m. yesterday in Erie. The truck operator was Bernard Stegman. Estimated damage to the car was 25 dollars. Undersheriff Jack Reynolds led the investigation.
Fire Chief C. W. Brennan reports Danville township and nearby areas recorded an estimated 1958 fire loss of about 12 905, less than half of 1957. Buildings accounted for 9 101 and contents 5 804 in 1958, with 147 runs total and three rescues including an injured squirrel and bee removal.
A Ft. Riley soldier Lionel J. Parenteau, 35, was killed in a three vehicle crash on U S Highway 24 about 15 miles west of Kansas City. Parenteau's car side swiped a truck then struck a bus head on. No injuries were reported aboard the truck or bus.
Wind driven blaze in a prefab dorm housing 45 Air Force students studying Russian at Syracuse University killed at least seven and injured 13. Flames raced through the one story barracks as men snapped from beds and jumped from windows in near zero weather. Firefighters took about 90 minutes to control the fire at 6 a.m. as authorities investigated a heating unit as the potential source.
Lee Andrews an 18 year old University of Kansas sophomore was bound over for trial before a Wyandotte County jury on charges he murdered his parents and sister. Judge William J Burns ordered him held in county jail without bond pending trial after the defense said there was no defense to offer. Prosecution said it would seek a sanity commission if the defense does not waive the privilege.
Washington reports that President Eisenhower will not hold a news conference this week. The decision reduces public appearances and delays policy Q A sessions.
