A 63 year old man Howard Buck hitchhiked toward Lawrence in search of work. He spent five days in bitter cold walking before a hunter found him under a bridge eleven miles southeast of Marion with both feet frozen below the knees. He had no socks shoes or permanent address. His feet were wrapped in flannel blankets inside rubber overshoes.
