The Associated Press reports a surge in highway deaths during the 102 hour Christmas to New Year period raising fears of near 1000 auto fatalities nationwide. The National Safety Council urged drivers to slow down as counts approached 1956 57 records amid widespread holiday travel.
The Chanute area faced a deep freeze with a low of four degrees and a 10 AM reading near seven. ST. PAUL The tractor of a semi-trailer truck overturned in a ditch on highway K57 about 8 30 last night. Undersheriff Jack Reynolds said the truck skidded on ice while passing a car. The driver George Eugene Nelson of Pittsburg was not injured. The trailer broke free and stood upright with little damage. It was empty and en route to McPherson.
Lundteigen Andrew Lundteigen Jr., formerly chief engineer, is named vice president in charge of operations for Ash Grove Lime Portland Cement Co. Effective Wednesday, he will oversee engineering operations at Chanute Louisville and Springfield plants, with headquarters in Kansas City.
