A slick gang in a black limousine robbed the Pierre on Fifth Avenue at 61st Street, binding 16 staff with tape and handcuffs and looting 47 safe deposit boxes for over $1 million in cash and jewelry. One captive was later freed to call police.
The first major winter storm moves across Kansas with heavy snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph. forecasters predict 4 to 6 inches in the southeast and 4 inches elsewhere, with drifting two to three feet in the northwest. Cold lows to 5 below in the northwest and teens in the southeast. Several schools closed as the storm nears.
An 11 year old girl Sharon Purdy received leg injuries at a service station at 15th and Santa Fe after being struck by a wheel from a vehicle driven by Claude Parrish. Parrish stated he was entering the gas station as she fell or stepped back. speed estimated at 5 mph. Sharon was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital and released.
Petitions filed in Concord New Hampshire seek to place President Nixon on the Republican presidential primary ballot for March 7. Lane Dwinnell leads a citizens group with over 1,000 signatures from each New Hampshire district and predicts Nixon will win easily.
Fire at 15 S Plummer damaged a wall and stored items in the garage of Orville Chandler. Fire Chief John Erickson said an overheated extension cord started the blaze. Neighbor Calvin Hurford alerted the department. the Chandler family was away.

Washington AP Preliminary Treasury data show 112 Americans with income over 200000 paid no federal income tax in 1970, including three reporting over 1 million. Rep Reuss says 1969 act failed to end tax avoidance and estimates 20 to 30 billion dollars could be raised yearly by closing loopholes. He co sponsors a reform bill to raise about 19 billion and 10 million more by repealing new business benefits and taxing foreign subsidiaries.
District Judge George Donaldson ruled the City of Chanute may condemn land south of town east of US 169 to lay a water line for Safari Industrial Park. Three appraisers Bruce Burris Phil Cooper and D C McCune will report and a public valuation hearing is set for Jan 19. City aims for voluntary easements. Smoky Hill Inc. to start work mid January.
The new solid waste landfill is scheduled to begin operations today per Bill Danley, city streets and utilities commissioner, though a full set of regulations is not yet in place. The smoldering fires at the old dump were extinguished Friday night and the dump is closed permanently.
The Kansas 1971 highway death toll rose by 18 from 1970 and, with late reports, stands at 675, still below the 1969 record of 780. Officials credit lower speeds and an educational campaign for the improvement, noting seven deaths over the New Year weekend versus eight the previous year.
The first 1972 baby in the Chanute trade area is Richard Shafer Jr., born at 8:43 a.m. at Neosho Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shafer of Iola. He weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces. Prizes will be awarded by Chanute merchants to the first newborn in the area in 1972. Grandparents are Van Dix of Iola and Harry Shafer of rural Iola.
Traffic accidents killed 432 persons over the New Year holiday weekend in a 78 hour period from 6 p m Thursday to midnight Sunday. The National Safety Council had estimated a toll between 400 and 500 before the holiday began.
Milwaukee police Lt. John F. Halaska lost a $125 overcoat after a restaurant theft. He recovered it at his desk Saturday night and confronted a man in custody who joked that the coat was too big anyway.

Sen. Vance Hartke of Indiana announced his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination and said he will campaign in the New Hampshire primary. He will decide on entering other states’ primaries after his New Hampshire campaign is organized for the March 7 balloting.
A 25 member White House advance party arrives in Peking to organize news coverage and technical details for President Nixon's China trip next month. The delegation left Andersen Air Force Base on Sunday and will stop in Shanghai before proceeding to the Chinese capital. No arrival times in China were announced.
The government cram course on filling out income tax forms will be sold this month at 15 000 post offices. The Postal Service will price Your Federal Income Tax at 75 cents and offer Tax Guide for Small Business at selected first class offices. Both were prepared by the IRS.
The Gallup Poll lists President Nixon as No 1 for the third year running among men admired by Americans. In the top five are Billy Graham Senator Edward M Kennedy Lyndon B Johnson and Hubert H Humphrey with Spiro Agnew Ralph Nader Pope Paul VI Bob Hope and George C Wallace among the top ten.
