A mass of cold arctic air moved over Kansas and forecast calls for light snow tonight and Saturday with much colder temperatures. North winds 20 to 30 mph create drifting, with three to six inches remaining from an earlier storm. Highs today ranged from 24 to 55 across the state.
In Richland Kansas a hunter turnout of about 400 aided by three Army helicopters from Ft. Riley felled 14 coyotes. Andrew J. Gray former Washington publicist cooked and served rabbit stew from three kettles at the Disney Community building. Georgia Neese Gray was ill and unable to attend. A creek mishap left a hunter soaked but unharmed.
President Eisenhower told Khrushchev and Voroshilov that Berlin must fit their peace aims. He cited Russia’s plan to make Berlin a free city and urged cooperation within a German and European security framework for real 1959 progress toward lasting peace.
The New York market opened 1959 near record highs with motors in demand. Many major issues rose up to a dollar at midday while some small issues fell. Trading stayed brisk and the market posted a record closing high, capping a strong year end rally.
Stark police report a burglary at the Eugene Lee garage with entry via east window. Items stolen include a half carton of cigarettes a box of cigars and about eight dollars in silver. Undersheriff Jack Reynolds and Sheriff-elect Gerald Sloan investigated. Lee found the break in on opening for business.
Four lanes of Interstate 35 from Merriam to Olathe were opened New Year’s Day completing a 14 mile stretch. The highway forms part of a planned 58 mile superhighway from Kansas City to Ottawa along U S 50. Northbound lanes are in use and the road has no intersections on the 14 mile segment.
The Associated Press reports at least 28 people including 12 children died in fires and blasts as the New Year holiday weekend began. Incidents spanned Rochester New York Vincennes Indiana Seattle Washington Texas Cambridge Massachusetts Indian Head Maryland San Carlos Arizona and Los Angeles area brush fires. A New Year’s dynamite prank near San Carlos caused fatalities. No fatalities were reported from the New Orleans ship collision blasts.
Veil Markham, Stark, paid 125 in police court after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated. He was arrested Tuesday after his car hit a vehicle driven by Harold Leslie of Iola at Ash and Grant. Leaving the scene and open bottle charges were dismissed. Companions John and Floyd Hamilton pleaded guilty to intoxication. John drew 12 days in jail and Floyd was fined 15.
State Highway Department said all main roads were open though slick with blowing snow and drifting in some areas. A foot of snow lay on portions of highways near Atchison while light snow fell at Horton and Marysville with limited visibility.
Kansas traffic fatalities listed by the State Accident Records Section in the last 24 hours show 1 death and to date in 1959 one, compared with 4 for the same period in 1958. Call 700 after 6 p.m. if Tribune delivery is unavailable.
Bearded Castro troops entered Havana from Matanzas and Las Villas as provisional leaders assume authority. Fidel Castro’s revolutionaries moved toward Camp Columbia while two provisional presidents disputing the vacant Batista chair held power amid tense streets and wary citizens.
A. A. Frischenmeyer of 314 N Highland waited through a long cold night to secure the first car tags. He arrived after 6 PM and, with others nearby, watched as Nos 1 to 5 were claimed by local residents and families. Frischenmeyer bought the first three tags for multiple cars and planned to return to work after a short rest.
Traffic deaths during the four day New Year holiday rose rapidly as winter storms closed in. The National Safety Council warned the toll could exceed 400 if the pace continued, with 60 hours left in the period. Kansas reported two deaths. Salina saw a fatal two car collision near an icy intersection. Missouri, Missouri Pacific rail yard incidents claimed further lives as conditions worsened.
Orvin Shively 26 of Erie R2 died at Mercy Hospital Parson s from injuries in a car wreck last Saturday near a road project on USA 9 north of Parsons in Neosho County. The 1953 Chevrolet was a total loss. two companions escaped with minor injuries. Shively, a Walnut native, worked at Montgomery Ward Chanute and held a PSU degree. He served in the Army 1952–54 and was a St Ambrose Catholic church and American Legion member. This marked Neosho County s seventh traffic fatality in 1958.
The Missouri-Kansas-Texas railway consolidates operations in Denison Texas effective yesterday merging Parsons Kansas and Waco Texas headquarters. Raymond B George becomes systemwide superintendent and takes over transportation duties formerly held by L M Stuart who retired at year end. Twenty key operating employees move to Denison from Parsons and Waco as C L Crain the Parsons superintendent retires.
No entries were received by 1 p.m. today for the annual Baby Derby in the Chanute trade area with prizes for the first baby born in 1959. Neosho Memorial Hospital reported no births in prospect. Last year’s winner was Dorothy Elizabeth Horne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Horne.
