President Johnson began his 1964 presidential bid with a firm civil rights stance before a Southern crowd in Miami Beach. He greeted street crowds, visited Joseph P. Kennedy in Palm Beach, and enjoyed a quick four-stop tour including a hotel nightclub appearance by Tony Martin and Cyd Charisse. Johnson reiterated that constitutional and human rights apply to all Americans and pledged ongoing action through legislation education and national effort. The trip included a Florida tour leg from Jacksonville to Palatka to Palm Beach and Miami Beach with multiple crowd scenes as he traveled by air and helicopter.
City Manager R. J. Hayes announced the resignation of Marion Alexander as superintendent of the street department effective immediately. Cecil Webb of the street crew was named acting superintendent. Alexander leaves to enter sales and service work for an appliance company.
Mrs. Kile Erickson reports a substitution of a tire and wheel on her family car within the past week. The left rear wheel was removed and replaced with a black wheel fitted with a smooth tire. The original green wheel with a good tire was taken.

Mild pleasant weather with fair skies covers most of Kansas through Saturday. Temperatures will rise gradually with highs in the upper 40s and lows around 25 to 30 tonight. Thursday highs ranged from 38 in Goodland to 50 in Hutchinson and Abilene, while early morning lows spanned 14 at Goodland to 30 at Pittsburg.

Teresa Anne Hanna 2 dies from burns suffered when clothing caught fire playing in yard of her Neodesha home Wednesday morning. Survived by parents David M. Hanna Jr and Mrs. Hanna, two brothers and grandparents. Funeral Saturday at 10 in Davis Memorial Chapel with burial at Verdi Cemetery. Rev. Tom Parish Jr to officiate.

In Carthage Missouri the old Jackson Hotel fire killed Glen Crayton of Cleveland and Charles Watkins of Carthage with five others injured. Fire chief described a hot fire as three fire units fought the blaze for about an hour while guests escaped from ladders and windows.
Monroe Harris, 43, serving a short disorderly conduct sentence, found a canvas bag with $9000 while washing a sheriff's patrol car. He turned in the money, which had been overlooked during a bank transfer. Judge Cecil McCallum ordered his immediate release. Harris’s sentence would have ended Monday.
Kansas City AP Maynard Lewis Cooper 22, leader of the 31st Street gang, convicted by Circuit Court Jury of assault with intent to kill. Jury sentenced him to five years in prison, last of 10 linked to October violence between 31st and 23rd Street gangs. Prosecutor notes no further gang activity since others were sentenced. In October a week of fighting left 10 injured, including a near fatal 12 year old girl. Cooper allegedly fired at Vinson Smalls whose car was hit twice but Smalls was unhurt.
In Monroe North Carolina three Negroes and a white man convicted of kidnapping a white couple after a 1961 race riot were sentenced to long terms. Willie May Mallory 16 to 20 years Richard Crowder 7 to 10 Harold Reape 5 to 7 all concurrent. appeals filed.
The Office of Education allocated 638637 in extra funds to 23 Kansas colleges under the national defense student loan program.
