The Rural Electrification Administration approved a $677,000 loan to the Golden Belt Telephone Association in La Crosse Kansas. The loan supports the rural telecom service expansion and improved facilities for the cooperative.
President Kennedy asks Congress for a $1 billion boost to health financing for the aged and to advance public health. He proposes a three year nationwide immunization drive for children under five, federal loans to expand group practice facilities, and $182 million more for mental health pollution control and medical research. He notes advances in cancer prevention and heart disease treatment and announces two White House bills on vaccination and pollution control.
Neosho Memorial Hospital administrator Glen Dormois said the new wing adds 22 beds bringing total capacity to 91. Without it in January the facility would have had 69 usable beds, with 51 to 64 beds needed for current patients and potential overflow.
ERIE burglars broke into the Erie High School building last night and robbed the safe taking about 75 dollars. Sheriff Jerry Sloan said a section of plate glass on the west side of the school was broken. A hole was knocked in the safe, apparently with a sledge, after an attempt to punch the lock spindle failed. The school was burglarized last Oct. 23 with fifty dollars taken and about two hundred dollars in damage.
AP reports Kansas traffic death log shows 31 fatalities in February 1962, with 69 deaths in the 1961 comparable period and 65 in 1962 through a 9 am Tuesday tally, reflecting a dangerous period.
KG&E proposes a revised Chanute power plan reducing the demand charge by limiting it to 60 percent of the largest generating unit. The plan envisions six gen units totaling 20,700 KW with firm capacity 10,700 KW and a current energy charge of 3.3 mills per kilowatt. City commissioners ordered a formal draft for study after the briefing by KG&E officers.
Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr., America's first around the world astronaut, told Congress that not every flight can come back as successfully as the three so far. He said trained pilots may be preferable to scientists on early flights and that future craft may need specialization for emergencies.
In a crowded hearing Glenn testified while James Webb Space Flight Director Robert Gilruth and fellow astronauts Alan Shepard and Virgil Grissom attended. Shepard said space crews earn their luck through careful testing and backup systems. Webb described a volunteer scientist for the moon mission and predicted Russia may orbit the moon first, but the U S will likely land and return a man from the moon.
The first of two two day radiological monitoring schools starts at the Highway Commission Division offices. Twenty students from 12 resident engineers offices in the 4th Highway Division attend each session. Civil Defense representatives are invited to join. Wayne Ellis leads the program with equipment to measure radiation from a radium source.
City warns dog owners of a 50 cent penalty on licenses issued after March 1 under the new animal control ordinance. Licenses, issued by City Clerk Howard Parsons at the Memorial Building, require proof of rabies vaccination. Fees are 2 dollars for male and spayed dogs and 3 50 dollars for unspayed females. 379 licenses have been issued, about a quarter of county totals.
Police arrested Phil Chaney of 1704 West Main at 1 a.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He posted a $125 bond and was released from custody this morning.
The Neosho County Red Cross holds a three day blood collection and annual fund drive with chairmen named in Chanute Erie Tioga and Walnut Grove townships. Blood collection is scheduled March 13 to 15 in Chanute and Erie with quotas of 120 pints each and Toronto events noted for other towns.
The Kansas highway patrol warned motorists of isolated slick spots on roads across the state. Up to 3 inches of snow was reported by 10 a.m with Hays at 3 inches and Mankato at 2 inches. southwestern division saw 2 inches generally. No highway accumulation reported by 10 a.m.
Don Horton and John Golay Jr. were burned at the Warwick wax plant when a percolator unit caught fire. They were taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for examination and treatment. Firefighters responded at 11 10 a.m. and were back at the station 25 minutes later.
Topeka reports a minus one reading marking the state's twelfth subzero day this winter the most since 1935-36. Lows ranged to five below in Goodland and Lovewell dam with widespread zero or below in western and northern areas. Snow remains variable and limited to western sections through Wednesday as highs struggle to reach 5 to 15 degrees.
