A chartered Greyhound bus returning from a Nevada resort skidded on U S 40 in a Sierra snowstorm and rolled over twice. A female passenger, Laverne Smith 49 of San Leandro, died. Driver Alan Maunder 30 of Oakland and 20 others were seriously injured. 13 more bruised. The bus rested on its side at the bottom of a 50 foot embankment 30 miles east of Auburn.

A 67 year old woman, Mrs. Elizabeth Ganow, was shot in the neck and an arm during an early morning attempted holdup at her cleaning shop in Kansas City. The bandit fled after demanding money.
AP reports slick and hazardous Kansas highways early today due to ice and snow. Northern areas worst, with several counties under new snow and freezing rain, while chemicals have been used to treat major routes and many roads remain slick.
Police questioned five more Chanute boys aged 13 to 15 in a continuing teenage shoplifting investigation. Officers said the group admitted taking items from local stores including cigarettes lighter yo-yo gloves socks pens and BB shot. About 20 teenagers have been implicated across at least eight stores.
Space hero John H. Glenn Jr. told Congress that orbit flights promise vast knowledge gains beyond description and could yield broad scientific benefits. He defended Mercury tests, noted zero gravity quirks, and anticipated three and more orbit missions with improvements after initial flights.

Almost 300 skydivers from 10 Midwestern states postponed the quarterly meeting of the Midwest Sport Parachute Council in Hutchinson Kansas due to rain and sleet. Jumpers delayed opening parachutes until near ground level.
