The Labor Department reports January living costs unchanged from December with higher food prices offsetting declines in other items. The revised index shows costs 4.5 percent above the 1957-59 average, and two index sets will be released to avoid confusion.
Don Wyatt of Chanute received a Wichita postcard dated October 21, 1947 asking his First Baptist Church to send a box of discarded shoes to a Wichita church. The card resurfaced in Chanute February 24, 1962, with 2 cents postage due. The sender remains unclear and unlikely to be fulfilled.
Mrs. Lucia L Ferguson, Tulsa Tribune columnist, and companion Mrs. Audrey Rudd Cole died in an automobile crash near Cross City Florida. A third passenger, Mrs. Ida Lambert, was in critical condition at Central Medical Center in Gainesville. All three were 75 and from Tulsa. Ferguson wrote Woman's View and a lovelorn advice column as Lucia Loomis.
The United States announced loans totaling 155.5 million to India for importing industrial and farm goods and funding a power project. A 100 million loan will buy fertilizer metals synthetic rubber and sulfur in the United States. A 52.5 million loan finances a 250000 kilowatt steam power station at Dhuvaran near Combay. A 3 million loan will allow a Bombay auto maker to import machinery from the United States to build cars and trucks.
An elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Joe O Grady Sr., suffered critical burns when a fire swept through their home south of Chapman Kansas. They were hospitalized in Abilene. Their son Joe Jr. sustained minor burns and exposure and also received hospital care.
The Senate Finance Committee approved a bill to raise the national debt limit temporarily to 300 billion dollars. The House already passed it and the Senate may take it up Monday. The extension runs until June 30.
TOPEKA AP Cost of supporting farm incomes must be reduced, farmers union cooperative marketing association members were told. Lud Strand member of the National Agricultural Advisory Commission to the President said American farms produce more than any market can absorb now or in the near future. He warned that production outruns consumption even with loans or food programs. Strand noted government expenditures for storage cannot continue indefinitely but the public will accept reasonable expenditures to aid farm income if natural resources are preserved.
A fire of undetermined origin reported at 12 08 pm damaged the C C Wilson residence at 313 West Main. The bed room ceiling suffered most of the loss with extensive water damage. insurance partially covers the damage though total losses could not be determined.
An investigation into teen shoplifting led to the return of two phonograph records and a comic book. Police said the boy provided more names of youths involved, with most suspects under 16 and being referred to juvenile authorities. over twenty names listed.
Mrs. Lindie Gass, 64, Mulvane, Kansas, died Tuesday night after a collision south of Derby. Her husband Clarence J. Gass, 56, was driving the car into a concrete bridge railing and received lip laceration treatment.
Topeka report lists Kansas traffic deaths over the 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday. February total 33, with 1962 to 1967 period figures noted as 33 and 70 respectively for the prior year comparison.
A brutal arctic air mass sent Kansas temperatures plunging to sub zero across the state. Topeka recorded 4 below with 13 sub zero days this winter. highs struggled in the 20s Thursday as forecasters warn of continuing cold and light snow.
Nancy Dalton and Nick Spero, both 26, faced grand larceny charges in Kansas City after allegedly kidnapping a poodle named Jolie and exchanging a $200 ransom. Jolie’s owners Roy and Mrs Reeves of Overland Park said a private detective arranged the bar drop, two witnesses linked to Spero, and Dalton and Spero were released on bond pending hearings.
A Mayetta Kansas five year old, Barry Rouse, died after being struck by a truck on a county road two miles north. The boy was riding with a companion as his mother loaded them from a stopped pickup at the bottom of a hill. The truck, driven by Jacob Schutz of Holton, swerved to miss the pickup and overturned.
The federal government spent more than 14.5 million dollars last year on caring for Cuban refugees in the United States, according to the Department of Health Education and Welfare.
City commission reviews chamber recommendation to form a planning board and seeks more information on its functions. They plan to consult the Kansas League of Municipalities before deciding.

Kansas City AP report says Airman Michael W. Flynn aged 19 was pronounced dead at Richards Gebaur Air Force Base after a fellow sentry Airman Rodney K Bullard 20 discharged a .45 caliber pistol accidentally striking Flynn in the left temple at the northwest entrance guard shack during duty.
Erie The County Treasurer says the state DMV notified that a 50 cent penalty for not purchasing 1962 license plates begins March 2. The first penalty took effect Feb. 16 and the total penalty after March 2 will be one dollar. An additional 50 cent penalty will apply on the 2nd of every following month.

Mrs. Dorothy Faler died from a bullet wound and skull fracture inflicted by her father in law after he intervened in her troubled marriage. Dane Faler, 75, killed himself with a shotgun nearby minutes later. Sheriff and county attorney cite long feud since divorce and remarriage. The couple had four children. they lived near Elk City, northwest of Independence.
The Kansas Supreme Court reviewed appeals by Butler County commissioners Worth Showalter and Jack M. Blain against a district court ouster order. The county attorney cited intoxication and gambling as grounds, while the core issue was whether their delayed responses satisfied legal reply requirements.
Beauteous Miss Universe Mar lene Schmidt of West Germany was escorted out of Tampa City Hall during a council meeting on flags and Americanism.
