Miami Beach boxing commission faced a flood of wires from across the country protesting the Cassius Clay Sonny Liston heavyweight championship pairing. Officials reviewed messages urging reconsideration and potential changes to the scheduled title clash.
De posed heavyweight champion Sonny Liston told reporters he pleaded to go on after the sixth round against Cassius Clay but his handlers overruled him. He quoted Willie Reddish urging him to protect his left, then stating they would end the bout. Liston said he refused but the fight was stopped.

Ivan J. Fiegenbaum a 30 year old Topeka man died when his car struck a bridge pillar on the Kansas Turnpike eight miles east of Lawrence. Authorities say he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and was alone in the vehicle.
Erie Farmers Coop filling station on US 59 was broken into last night. About eight dollars in change was taken from a pop machine. Sheriff George Neely said the machine was opened with a key kept in the station cash register. The machine was relocked and the key returned after money was removed. Entry was gained by breaking an east window.
Atty. Gen. William M. Ferguson appeals to the Kansas Supreme Court from a Shawnee County District Court ruling that trading stamps redeemable as U.S. savings bonds are legal. The case centers on whether savings bonds fall under Kansas law prohibiting trading stamps. Several cities have enacted ordinances banning the trading stamp plan.
The Rt. Rev. Shirley Hall Nichols aged 79, former Episcopal bishop of western Kansas, died Tuesday night of cancer in a New York hospital. He led Salina diocese from 1941 to 1955, served as missionary to Japan in 1911, and was bishop of Kyoto from 1926 to 1940. He married Hasu no Hana Gardiner in Tokyo. she survives with two sons and a daughter.
The Senate approved the tax cut 74 to 19 and sent the measure to President Johnson who will sign at 5:30 p.m. CST. The plan lowers rates by about 19 percent for 80 million individuals and 9 percent for 550,000 corporate taxpayers, with checks reflecting changes starting March 4. Johnson will address the nation at 5:45 p.m., live on most networks.
Nancy Carole Tyler, secretary to Bobby Baker, refused to answer questions in a televised Senate Rules Committee hearing and invoked the 5th Amendment. She said the inquiry invades her privacy and offered no belief of moral or legal wrongdoing. Baker urged silence on his enrichment while in office. contempt proceedings could face him. A separate possible contempt citation for Tyler was discussed by aides. Tyler, 24, had been subpoenaed about Baker's outside business and financial dealings and now works in his law office.
Neosho county Democrats have elected slates of eight delegates and alternates for the party's district and state conventions. Alternates include Robert L Bri ley Mrs Sheldon Propst Chanute Bernard H. Smith Oden Dunham Stark Everett Shrum Ralph Watkins Eric Charles Norris St Paul and Fox. The district convention will be in Chanute March 22 and the state convention in Hutchinson April 11. The selection was made at a Erie meeting attended by about 150. Henry M. Smith presided. U S O'Hern spoke on campaign organization.

Contributions to the women's committee drive total $475 toward place baskets in the downtown area. Sixty baskets will be bought and shipped for Main and North and South Lincoln. A $600 goal remains. New York AP reports the National Polio Foundation March of Dimes announced no polio cases in the United States for three consecutive weeks for the first time since 1938. The week ending January 4 marked the first zero week, followed by zero weeks for January 18 and February 1.
An experimental two man aircraft with helicopter like takeoff and landing and jet speeds will be delivered to the Army next week for tests at Edwards Air Force Base California. The craft called a vertical and short takeoff and landing aircraft was rolled out at Ryan Aeronautical Company's plant Tuesday.
