Buffalo brick plant reported a 7:30 p.m. fire in the dryer room caused by a malfunctioning gas fan. The blaze damaged equipment including a $3,000–$4,000 brick cutter and a 50 horsepower motor, with the roof burning but walls intact. Forty-five workers will be idle two to five days as repairs proceed. insurance coverage believed.
NEW ORLEANS AP An Eastern Air Lines four engine jetliner with 58 aboard from Mexico City to New York vanished shortly after takeoff from New Orleans and crashed into Lake Pontchartrain. Coast Guard found airplane debris clothing luggage and what resembled body parts. Helicopter pilots reported possible in air or post impact explosion. Debris spread over a wide area about six miles south of the north shore and about 20 miles north of New Orleans.
Weather Bureau continues stockmen and traveler warnings for western Kansas and extreme northeast New Mexico with snow and blowing snow expected to spread to central Kansas and the Texas panhandles tonight. Winds 25 to 35 mph in northwest Kansas will shift southward, reducing visibility. A cold wave is forecast for the central plains, with progressively colder air moving into Iowa.
In Derby Kansas two 11 year olds Gary Yankowski and Richard Duncan suffocated when a cave on the Arkansas River bank collapsed. Aiding search, 10 year old David Isbell led police to the spot around 8 pm. The boys were buried under sand four feet deep. Gary’s pulse was detected but resuscitation failed. Richard Duncan is the son of Sgt. and Mrs. Richard H. Duncan, stationed at McConnell Air Force Base.
Police arrested Vern Potteiger of Independence around 2 30 a m today on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He was slated for a police court hearing later today after being taken into custody at 14th and Santa Fe.
An elderly couple, Bethuel Z. Sanders, 64, and Sarah Elizabeth Sanders, died when their car collided with a Frisco freight train a mile and a half west of Carthage. The engineer Elmer John Ballay, 64, of Monett, said the car drove into the path of the northbound train.

Gov. John Anderson signed three measures after a five day special session to fix Kansas apportionment rules in line with a state Supreme Court order. The meeting foregrounded industrial development talks with the Chamber of Commerce about a mobile homes plant. Newton was chosen for that site. The JayCees will continue volunteer fireman services as auto alarm system plans proceed. Proposals to widen Main and add parking were not yet advanced. District court improvements on Memorial Building third floor were reviewed, including a new jury room, soundproofing, drapes, storm windows, cork tile, and a ventilation upgrade. City Clerk Parsons gave the invocation. Commissioner Kensett was absent.

Dallas AP report notes the fifth juror was sworn in for Jack Ruby's murder trial. Douglas J. Sowell, 33, a jet airplane mechanic, joins Luther E. Dickerson as jurors accepted that day. Sowell had doubts about a conspiracy and had seen the Oswald shooting on television. Dickerson, 27, vice president of a chemical firm, testified he did not view the original or rerun footage. Defense raised polygraph familiarity as a qualification note, prompting objections. The juror was later deemed acceptable by the district attorney as the pool grows. Proceedings may shift to Supreme Court review on juror eligibility for those who witnessed the shooting on TV.
Democratic leaders proposed Johnson a farm bill trade for a brief delay in civil rights action. Senate ready to call up the House civil rights measure and store it while debating a wheat cotton bill, delaying a filibuster until roughly March 2.
