Robert Moody of Almena Kan was struck by his own car at a Hays gas station after stepping from a running vehicle believed to be in neutral. The car backed into another, hitting Moody who could not escape. He was listed in good condition at Hadley Regional Medical Center Monday night.
More than 1,000 dwellings condemned after the Los Angeles earthquake a week ago. Aftershocks, four felt Monday, caused only minor damage. Latest shocks measured 3.5 to 3.9 on the Richter scale, centered in the San Fernando Valley. The main quake registered 6.6.
In Wichita police patrolled South High School to prevent repeat clashes after a fight between two boys sparked disturbances between white and black students. About 240 black students attend the school and two-thirds were absent, while white attendance was normal. Seven students were arrested Monday in connection with the disturbances.
India and Pakistan summoned home their ambassadors after a hijacked Indian airliner crisis. B K Acharya and Sajjad Hyder are due to leave their posts on Thursday but insist they will return to their postings.
Eleven SANE members staged street theater outside Secretary Laird's Bethesda home protesting Army intelligence surveillance of peace groups. The demonstration lasted about forty minutes while Laird was at the Pentagon.
New York banks led by Benkers Trust Co. lowered the prime lending rate to 5 percent from 6 percent, the fourth such 25 point cut this year. Chase Manhattan First National City Chemical Irving Trust and Manufacturers Hanover followed in New York with several others nationwide including First National Bank of Chicago Philadelphia Boston Detroit Dallas and St. Louis.
Col. Gerald V. Kehrli, a 28 year Air Force veteran who commanded an airlift squadron, was found guilty by a seven colonel and brigadier general court martial of seven marijuana counts. He received three years’ imprisonment and a $15,000 fine, with acquittal on one count of allegedly asking a sergeant to obtain marijuana for him last September 15. He was convicted of soliciting marijuana from subordinates, smoking and possessing the drug, and giving it to personnel in his unit.
Sgt. Jimmy Ray Finley 24 from Fort Worth Texas is being questioned by U S Air Force investigators after a 17 hour kidnapping in Ankara Turkey. Turkish police search for the gunmen as speculation centers on leftist groups linked to two recent bank robberies in the city.
The Senate State and Local Affairs Committee approved a bill to legalize mixed drinks in Kansas restaurants. The measure, passed on a voice vote, would apply to eateries seating 40 or more with at least half business in food, with tax revenues split to cities counties and the state.
John F. Kennedy led with 237 of 636 votes in the Presidents Day ballot conducted with the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce. Abraham Lincoln was second with 121, while George Washington ranked fifth with 32 and Harry S. Truman seventh with 17. Several presidents received minimal or write-in votes from area shoppers.
The Kansas House approved an amendment to repeal the constitutional ban on lotteries by 89 votes to 33. If the Senate consents by two-thirds, the measure heads to a special election on April 6 for voter decision.
