Reading officials found the treasurer's office lacked a burglar alarm for 15 years as nearly 18 million dollars moved through City Hall annually. The system was converted to AC, rebuilt, and overhauled by order of the city treasurer.
A general court martial for U S Air Force Col Gerald V Kehrli concludes four days of testimony. The jury of an Air Force general and seven colonels deliberates one hour without a verdict and adjourns to Tuesday. Kehrli, 46, from Willmar Minnesota, did not testify. Defense witnesses did not challenge testimony that he used marijuana at unit pot sessions and asked sergeants to obtain cannabis.
The U.S. Command said last week total American troops in Vietnam fell by 2100 to 332900. Another 1555 to be withdrawn as part of Nixon’s sixth reduction aiming for 284000 by May 1.
Hutchinson Kansas AP three Kansas State Industrial Reformatory escapees were thought to have fled in a stolen car yet an 18 year old Marion jail fugitive was captured after a three hour manhunt when a farmer's dog cornered him. The missing inmates are Gary Far rar 19 a grand larceny convict from Saline Glen Henson 23 convicted of forgery from Corpus Christi and Daniel Hill 26 from Orlando Florida serving a firearms sentence.
Gov. Robert Docking announced Kansas Highway Director John Montgomery has been named to the executive committee of the American Association of State Highway Officials. Docking called it a signal honor for Montgomery, a Junction City newspaper publisher, and for his administration, noting nearly $3 million in contracts and 10 000 miles of state roads have been let, with Interstate 70 completed across the state.
Payments from federal mineral leasing distributed by the Bureau of Land Management cover six months ending December 31 1970. A Sunday blaze at Wichita Union Stockyards destroyed about 200 tons of prairie hay and 40 tons of alfalfa. The barn end was damaged, with losses estimated at 25 000 dollars. Cause was not immediately determined.
The Kansas House opened debate on a constitutional amendment to end the ban on lotteries. Rep. Jess Taylor moved the measure up to the floor, saying it would clear the Bingo issue while allowing the Legislature to decide on gambling forms. Independence Kansas AP reports a car killed two deer on US 169 near the north river bridge, injuring no person. Officer say two deer died, game warden notified and the deer were removed.

A vacant house for sale at 522 S Wilson was broken into Saturday night. Charles Follmer of 519 S Wilson reported to police Sunday morning that entry was gained by breaking a front door glass. Nothing was reported missing from the building.

Odorant was sent through lines Tuesday night January 26 and off at 2 p.m. Wednesday. more than 200 calls of gas leaks followed. Leaks on curbside and meters are city responsibility. leaks inside homes fall to residents. This round both north and south side pumps will operate.
Erie Glen and Eddie Rush reported to the sheriff that welding gear discovered in a hedge row on their rural Erie farm. Sheriff David Kern said the equipment is believed stolen Feb. 3 from the Gene Spielbusch farm near South Mound.

Jim Miller of 536 N Evergreen reported a 1964 Ford Falcon stolen from his father in law Robert Spence 419 N Steuben overnight. About 12:45 today the car was found returned to Miller at his home in the same condition as when taken.
