Rail timetable recalls early 1900 Santa Fe operations

District Editor notes 1900 July 1 timetable for Southern Kansas Division of the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railway. Lester Welch of 501 S Santa Fe owns the document. The era saw eight passenger trains and multiple freights daily across Chanute and branch lines to Benedict Madison Coffeyville Pittsburg Ottawa Burlington with Chanute as division HQ under Superintendent J L Barnes assisted by T J Whisenand. Dr W E Barker listed as local Santa Fe doctor.

Reminiscences of a 1910 Boy Scout Troop Hunt

Lloyd E Woosley recalls early Boy Scout days at the Methodist Church with a deer-hunt prank on the Rush farm east of town. He and Everett Hurt hit the wooden deer, scout suits cost about four dollars from Martin Clothiers, and a one week camp near the McDougal farm involved river floods and a Katy train ride to Chanute.

Compounded Tragedy in Neodesha Break-In Probed

The Wilson County sheriff's office continues a search for suspects who broke into the George Robert home near Neodesha the day after a father and son died in a train car accident west of town. The mother and George Jr. were away in Wichita when the break-in occurred. Missing items include a boat, oars, an electric blender, a wall can opener, a new gun rack, and presents. Entrance was gained by prying a rear window and unlocking the back door. The boat was kept in a granary.

Katy Line Fate Nears End for Parson to Junction City Run

The Katy railway once carried two daily passenger trains through here on the Parsons to Junction City route. Declining patronage reduced service to one daily round trip before abandonment. An ICC ruling 18 years ago allowed elimination of the Piqua to Junction City segment. The Missouri Pacific later bought the Piqua to Humboldt line. the junction line was among Katy’s first two. Levi Parsons founded the line running along the Neosho River through Burkington and Emporia to Junction City in 1870.

The Associated Press reports Kansas lawmakers pushed 42 bills into the hopper ahead of a Monday introduction deadline. Senator Glee S. Smith proposed three sheriff qualifications bills. A House bill would create an 11 member Regents Commission to assess higher education needs. The Ways and Means Committee cut 128 420 dollars from Capitol Area Plaza planning but kept 15 000 for the governor mansion entrance. A proposal would bring the legislature under the Kansas Public Employees Retirement system.

Party at Zion Lutheran Church for Chanute residents

Zion Lutheran Church sponsors a party at 2 p.m. Tuesday for physically and mentally handicapped residents of Chanute. The event at the church offers transportation by calling 431-0329. Programs for the handicapped have expanded and similar socials draw 30 or more attendees.
