Ranger 6 ends its 66 hour approach to the Moon with six television cameras inoperative. Engineers report no full video power as the craft impacts the Sea of Tranquility. The mission, part of a sequence leading to manned landings, marks the sixth consecutive Ranger failure and costs about 168 million dollars.
Topeka AP Kansas lawmakers return for the closing budget session with a proposed 1965 budget near 421 million dollars. A House Republican caucus aims to finalize the program while Senate reviews key measures. Governor Anderson hints at two constitutional amendments and a prison site. ten amendments proposed in the Senate and five in the House.
Firemen fought a blaze at Sportsman's Supply Co. 201 W Main at 4 15 p m Saturday, flames from a grass fire spreading into the west wall and rising to the roof. Smoke and water damage reported. loss not estimated. At 5 15 p m they were called to the adjacent police department for smoldering insulation around a pipe in a jail cell caused by a cigarette butt.
A two day riot control course will be held at the National Guard armory for peace officers of southeast Kansas. Hosted by the University of Kansas and partners including the peace officers training school and government research center, cooperators include the attorney general's office highway patrol and Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Local officers will attend.

A 26 year old Hays man Norman Krobe was killed when his pickup skid on ice on Interstate 70 near Wakeeney Kansas. Two passengers Jerry Amaska and Fidel Stecklein, both of Hays, were injured in the crash.

The women's committee of the Chamber of Commerce received $35 in contributions by mail for the planter purchase city beautification project. ERIE The Jake Bretches home three miles east and a quarter mile north of Morehead and its contents were destroyed by fire Saturday night, the sheriff's office here reported. Police arrested Leonard H. Jackson of Erie about 1 a.m. yesterday on charges of intoxication and transporting an open bottle. He was released later on a $40 bond. Officers said Jackson was in a car when arrested but not driving. He was taken into custody at 2nd and Lincoln.
Wilfred Chabotte, 42, had his severed forearm rejoined in an emergency operation at Hartford Hospital last Tuesday. By Sunday, doctors found clotting of blood vessels and reduced circulation in the left hand, forcing surgeons to undo the earlier repair.
Cecil Lair of rural Buffalo died after a motorcycle crash in Independence on a Saturday night. He was driving with Jerry Rice of Independence behind him. Lair swerved to avoid a bicycle rider, the bike hit a curb, and both riders were thrown. Lair died at Mercy Hospital, Rice treated for cuts, and the motorcycle belonged to Gary Whitson. Lair, an Acme Brick Co. employee, is survived by his wife and mother. funeral set for 2 p.m. at Rodrick Funeral Home in Independence.
About a quarter of New York City's one million pupils stayed home in a one day protest demanding total racial integration. Officials called the action mostly a fizzle while noting some absenteeism and limited picketing outside hundreds of schools.
Gov. John Anderson urged constitutional amendments to expand authority for the state, counties, and cities to cooperate with other government levels. He plans to press the proposals in talks with legislative leaders as two more amendments can be voted on in November. One plan would let local governments cooperatively handle functions now duplicated, such as court records and tax collections. The other would authorize inter state cooperative accords with neighboring states. He cited recent blocked plans to join Missouri on a women's prison and to exchange patients with Nebraska.
