A boy about eight or nine on a bicycle wearing a cellophane helmet-like bag collided with a car driven by Dessie Greenwood at 118 N Garfield. He was uninjured and rode away with the bag still on. Police did not reveal his name.
A lone bandit posing as an insurance adjuster robbed the Piqua State Bank of about $2,000 around 12:05 PM. J. H. Wille, bank president, said the robber gathered cash from the cage, then herded cashier H. G. Wille and bookkeeper Marcella Bakley into a vault before fleeing west in a 1950 Hudson with Sedgwick County plates. A 30-year-old tall slender man carried the act, and police pursued a suspect car toward Augusta.
Dr. George W. Jackson says bids for the state tuberculosis hospital project must be opened February 23 at Topeka. Construction could start soon after award with a general contract cost estimated at 765000 dollars. The plan calls for a one story building on a 50 acre site near Neosho Memorial Hospital with 38 bed wards and space for exams, labs, X ray and other services.
The Chanute Community Concert Association kicks off its 1955-56 membership drive the week of March 7 under president Kenneth Tebow. New members receive a bonus concert, featuring Apollo boys choir on April 24, with Mrs Ebba Mattson of the national offices assisting. The next scheduled concert is the Nettleton twins on March 16.
Kansas state accident records show last 24 hours zero fatalities and year to date 49 in 1955, with the same period in 1954 totaling 50. The Topeka region data appears in the statewide traffic fatality tally.
Neosho County peace officers including local police, sheriff and undersheriff, and County Attorney Charles Forsyth will meet for a dinner at Tioga Hotel this evening. Kenneth H. Foust, Iola attorney, will speak. The Cha nute department shift from 4 p.m. to midnight will stay on duty. Future meetings are planned monthly.

In Chanute a porchlight polio drive collected 2086.38 for the March of Dimes in one hour surpassing last year’s total by about 400. About 1071 one dollar gifts plus other contributions were counted at police headquarters after a 7 to 8 p.m. parade organized by 100 mothers led by Mrs. D. A. Finney.
Grace Wieland, 63, of Independence Kansas, widow and former teacher, won a national contest for the last line of a pancake mix advertisement. Her total prize value is about 25 000 dollars including 5000 for landscaping and furnishing. Her husband James died in 1947. She has a son James II who is Independence undersheriff and two daughters living in Bartlesville Oklahoma and Fort Huachuca Arizona.
Kansas Senate members largely support making the buffalo the official state animal. Debate centers on a proposed amendment suggesting the animal’s illustration face east to deter nudism and rear to the west to shield from winds. Senator Croxton’s nudism ban petitions prompted the proposal.
T A Streets retired from the Altoona postal service after 47 years beginning in September 1907 under postmasters James T Miller H C Duckworth Fred H Dodd Mrs Gradie DeBolt and Ernest L Scott. A post retirement gathering at Streets home honored him with a covered dish dinner and photos.
Wichita man John Bentz aged 49 died in a hunting accident near Culver Kansas when his shotgun discharged as he stumbled while rabbit hunting in a field two miles west of Culver. A four year old girl Rita Thomas who joined him for the trip ran a long muddy field to seek help but Bentz was dead at the scene. Bentz was married and the father of two children.
A coffin loaded truck proved deadly for Alonzo Dukette of Worcester Mass when the motor kept running to heat the cab at a gas station in Montpelier. Carbon monoxide killed Dukette and left Roland Gaboury ill. The truck belonged to Frank Sessions Co. of Worcester, casket makers.
The Defense Department announced about 9,000 servicemen from all branches will participate in the atomic weapons test planned for Nevada this spring.
President Eisenhower declared the United States will defend Formosa as a western Pacific island barrier and deter Communist miscalculation. He avoided commenting on hot pursuit orders and cautious about triggering new tensions while emphasizing U S resolve.
The Senate ratified the Southeast Asia Defense Treaty by 82 to 1 with Sen. Langer dissenting. Signatories include the United States Great Britain France Australia New Zealand the Philippines Pakistan and Thailand. The treaty covers Vietnam Laos and Cambodia as nonsigners with the Philippines yet to ratify.
Weather story notes 3 killed and about 100 injured in twister outbreaks across the Midsouth. Forecast calls for rain and warmer temperatures, with near blizzard risk in northwestern Kansas and snow in the northwest and northeast regions.

H H Hollenshead veteran filling station operator sells his Phillips 66 station at 224 W Main Chanute to H H Larson of Erie. Larson, a 1907 Erie resident, takes over management Tuesday after previously running a Erie grocery poultry and station business. They plan to move to Chanute in a month or two and have two grown daughters Betty Lou and Phyllis Jean Larson in Kansas City.
The Civil Service Commission announced today it will receive applications for the postmastership at Independence Kansas. The office pays 5970 dollars a year.
A cluster of tornadoes ripped through Arkansas Mississippi and Alabama killing at least 27 near Commerce Landing Miss and three at Olive Branch Miss. Many dead and injured were schoolchildren. Rescue crews and National Guardsmen worked amid wrecked tenant homes and a destroyed Leatherman plantation complex.
Henry Fields, 60, of 315 N. Malcolm, bound over to district court on a $10,000 bond after a preliminary hearing in city court on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He allegedly shot Ike Jones twice in the head with a .22 rifle after injuring him with a knife on January 24. Jones, 55, of 1207 N. Steuben, remains in Neosho Memorial Hospital recovering.
Gov Hal proclaims National Defense Week in Kansas covering February 12 through 22 as a statewide observance. The declaration urges citizens to support national defense programs and participate in related activities statewide.
