Oil heater overflow sparked a blaze that engulfed a two story brick tenement in Amsterdam New York early today killing Juan Rivera and his five children and ten others. Ten families lived in eight apartments and 22 occupants escaped or were rescued.
Jerry Spooner reports a polio fund container theft at his Parson store after a fourth break in over two weeks. The burglar pried a back window and escaped with customer donations. Spooner has the door lock rechanged and alerted police.
The Santa Fe doodlebug made its last run to Winfield and the Coffeyville Independence Cherryvale route will be taken over by the Kansas Trail Bus System. The line began passenger service from Independence to Wellington in 1884 and was discontinued after the Santa Fe lost the mail contract on March 1, 1954.
Uniontown farmer Tom George planned a oyster supper for his four brothers and relatives when six cans were found to contain beans instead of oysters. Quick calls summoned replacements from friends to salvage the reunion meal honoring Ed from Missouri Bill from Colorado and Mitch and Sam of Uniontown.

McPherson Kansas was the site of a fatal accident when 38 year old Joe Shepard touched a 12 000 volt power line while assisting an electrician on an oil field project east of Galva. He was a carpenter and is survived by a widow and two daughters.
Fresh fighting on sea and air swirled around the Tachen Islands as Nationalist and Communist forces exchanged bomb and gun strikes. The Defense Ministry reported Nationalist planes clashed with MIG15 fighters, dove bombing Yikiangshan and Toumen amid heavy anti aircraft fire, while Communist warships shelled Yushan and a Nationalist warship engaged multiple Red ships. U S diplomat Rankin conferred with Shen Chang huan on the status of the offshore outposts.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Orton Kinne farm home four and a half miles northwest of here and all its contents Sunday morning. Mr and Mrs Kinne were at church in Erie when the blaze started. The fire was first discovered by Ewing Showalter nearby and had progressed so far nothing could be saved. Loss unofficially estimated at 3000 dollars. Neighbors are helping the Kinnes establish a temporary home in a vacant house.
A late model light green car traveling west on 14th Street allegedly struck a Santa Fe switch engine controlled train at the 4th street crossing around midnight. The car driver fled the scene. damage to the automobile was not confirmed but believed minor.

Five year old Daniel Pohlabel is hospitalized with two head gashes after a two pound metal bar fell from a B25 and pierced the roof of his Dayton home. Patrons of Union school district No 3 voted 23 1 in favor of a consolidation plan at a special meeting. The plan requires use of the present Union building and site and approval by six districts to take effect. Other districts slated to vote include Harmony Joint No 1 North Valley Cre mono No 59 Prairie Queen joint No 98 and Big Creek No 4. No further votes are expected for about two weeks due to posting requirements.
A peanut was removed from the right lung of 13 month old Leland Thorne at Providence Hospital Kansas City. The child, son of Mr and Mrs Junior Thorne of Lawrence, was brought in yesterday with a police escort and his condition was reported good today.
