Dorothy Lamour spent Christmas in Chanute for the Memorial auditorium Hello Dolly performance with husband William Howard and a 76 member troupe. An interview proved difficult backstage but Lamour obliged briefly after the first curtain and posed for a quick picture. The Cha nute Community Celebrity Series presented the Thornton Wilder play with Jerry Herman music and Miss Lamour drawing a 600 strong audience.

Moscow Idaho AP reports University of Idaho forestry professor F H Pitkin says 130000 Christmas tree seedlings have been ordered, signaling a record Moscow area crop for next December. Seedlings will be delivered to growers in the spring.

Five Story Fall Kills Youth at Sedgwick Jail Escape Attempt

Timothy J. Squirrel, 16, died after a five story fall while escaping Sedgwick County jail by a makeshift rope. He and co‑inmate John D. Crouch overpowered guard Ron Rice, tied and gagged him, then Squirrel slid from an eighth‑floor window. Crouch, held on vandalism and larceny charges, waited transfer to Topeka's Boys Industrial School.

Date Set For Launch Of Unmanned Lunar Module

NASA officials set January 17 as the target date for the first unmanned Lunar Module flight. The 62 hour earth orbital test, designated Appello 5, aims to verify readiness for manned space operations and qualify the Lunar Module concept and main propulsion engines. If successful two astronauts will then dock, descend to the moon, and return to the orbiting Apollo cabin.

23 Yule Dinner Guests For Hospital Patients

Neosho Memorial Hospital cared for 35 patients yesterday Christmas Day. Twenty three patients had guests for the noon meal. The hospital provided the meals and tray favors of Santa Claus candy jars. Marvin Wolfe supplied Santa Claus for the patients on Christmas Eve.

U S Planes Hit North Vietnam Convoyes After Christmas Truce

U S warplanes struck North Vietnam as the Christmas truce ended, destroying or damaging about 100 trucks and spotting over 300 trucks along the coast and in Thanh Hoa and Vinh areas. Navy Skyhawks bombed a 150 truck convoy and another of 100, with a ferry carrying eight trucks sunk. One Marine aircraft was downed and a second crashed on return to Da Nang, killing the copilot and injuring the pilot.

Explosions Rock Moscow Apartment, Car Bombs Kill/Disrupt

Two blasts struck Moscow on a Monday night. An apartment building housing about 100 residents collapsed after a likely gas main failure, with casualty estimates ranging from over 20 to 12. A separate car bomb targeted AP bureau chief Henry S. Bradsher, causing no injuries.

Tires and Wheels Recovered in Altoona Break-In

Six tires and wheels identified as taken in a break-in at Altoona were recovered from a 17 year old Chanute boy's car here early Sunday, police said today. The boy was placed in custody and taken to Fredonia. A Wilson county youth also was reported to be implicated.
