In an inquiring reporter feature, area youths name their desired gifts for Christmas. Rodney Erickson wants a yo-yo, Richard Dietrich a gift from Santa, Mike Beck prefers whatever he receives, and others list cars, clothes dryers, stereos, electric shavers, dolls, and many toys.
An extended area forecast shows a generally fair, warming trend through Sunday with high temperatures mostly in the 40s and 50s and lows in the 20s. In Topeka, the Weather Bureau expects snow to melt by Christmas Day as conditions turn sunny and warmer with southerly winds 15 to 25 mph.
Chanute residents tour a city bedecked with lights and festive displays. Homes on Plummer, Larson, and Tennessee glow with luminaries and blue accents while downtown Main Street shows bright ornaments and window trees. A live nativity at Lutheran Church and a Rudolph pump at Churchill Firm add seasonal whim.
President Johnson flew from Pakistan to Rome for an audience with Pope Paul VI after urging U.S. troops in Vietnam that their effort would not be in vain. He paused in Karachi for talks with President Ayub Khan, and his itinerary includes Tehran en route to explain U.S. Vietnam policy. At home, the pope urged a bombing halt and a peace sign from the Communists as crowds in Rome prepared for protests.
In Da Nang Vietnam an organ is set for Christmas Eve at the USO chapel recalling Guadalcanal 1942 when Marine Cpl Barney Ross then boxing champion urged Father Fred Gehring to play My Yiddishe Mama. Ross died in 1940s from throat cancer. An organ was sent to Vietnam in April in his memory.
A trio robbed the Cernikoff Supermarket in Kansas City and fled with a large sum of money as two employees and a customer were wounded. Israel Gallas, 61, was shot in the back after being forced to lie on the floor. A 70 year old customer was hit in the heel by a stray bullet. A fourth man drove the getaway car. Police described the loss as substantial.
Spec. 4 Carl E. Murray of Topeka Kansas was identified by the Pentagon on Friday in the Vietnam casualty list of Army men killed in action.
Pasadena AP reports Mariner 4 terminated its three year mission after micrometeorite hits. The spacecraft expended nitrogen to stay balanced on a 1.53 billion mile journey begun November 28, 1964, and suffered extreme drift before tracking ceased December 20. It photographed Mars from 6 118 miles on July 14, 1965.

As holiday truce periods approach, ground fighting in Vietnam slows with U S troops receiving a Christmas visit from President Johnson. The North Vietnamese declare a 1 a m Sunday ceasefire while the South Vietnamese truce begins Sunday evening, and air operations continued around the DMZ with B52s and Navy aircraft at risk.
Fourteen members from three West Side gangs once at odds joined as a cooperative to deliver 6000 donated toys to 35 settlement houses and youth centers in Lawndale. Chiefs say the groups now focus on community service under Operation Bootstrap with Youth Action.
