South Vietnamese soldiers and American helicopters wiped out half of a Viet Cong battalion near Quang Tri. The Red force suffered heavy losses, with 208 bodies and numerous weapons left behind. Fifteen South Vietnamese dead and 59 wounded. three U.S. helicopter crewmen and an American adviser wounded alongside one Australian adviser.
An explosion and fire at the Atlantic Research Corp. in Hanover Mass. killed one and injured at least 14 in a frame mixing explosives building. Twenty seven workers were present. 12 were treated at South Weymouth's South Shore Hospital and at least 10 remained for care. Two others were taken to Brockton Hospital. The blast tore off the roof of the plant within a sprawling industrial complex.
A 16 year old Erie boy admitted in questioning that he passed forged checks at three Chanute stores. The crimes were reported starting December 6 and he was returned to Erie and placed in county jail awaiting further proceedings.
President Thieu stated South Vietnamese troops must fire back if attacked from Cambodia and may pursue Communist forces into Cambodia if necessary. He noted Prince Sihanouk hinted at inviting volunteers from China, North Korea and Cuba if US forces invade.

A bill advanced in Oklahoma to raise starting teacher pay from 4200 to 13500 dollars. It would also set 14500 for masters and 15500 for doctorates. Officials warn the state would face about 250 million dollars a year in costs.
NASA says its fog dissipation project yielded good results by seeding airport fog with sodium chloride from a light plane at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo New York. The chemical absorbs moisture droplets and effectively becomes rain aiding visibility.

Four U S Navy deserters who jumped from an aircraft carrier and reached Moscow said they are fed up with Russia and want to emigrate to Sweden for steady jobs. They spoke with an English-speaking aide in Gorky Park, saying they were kept in a private house near Moscow and faced restrictions. The men are Craig W Anderson John M Barilla Richard D Bailey and Michael A Lindner, all aged 19 or 20.
Kansas traffic death log reports 648 fatalities for 1967 through December 3 9 a.m. with 47 for December and one previously unreported fatality included.
An ex convict identified as Jerry Stromske 23 of West Terre Haute Indiana captured after a Christmas Eve kidnapping in Crawfordsville Indiana. Janet Downen 16 was rescued unharmed after two suspects abducted her at gunpoint and fled toward Utah. Sheriff Albert Passie said Thomas Stevens 23 was wounded by a shotgun blast and is jailed in Price Utah.
A 20 year old woman Sylvia Szlak in New York received a kidney from a stroke victim donor after four hours of tissue compatibility tests. The operation at Bellevue Hospital lasted 90 minutes and the transplanted organ is functioning well. A five surgeon team led by Dr Felix Rapaort at New York University School of Medicine conducted the procedure five days ago.
A leaked communication comments that four deserting U.S. sailors influence opinions by praising United States policies, while noting that the deserters themselves impress most observers.
