Two newborn boys born at Neosho Memorial Hospital mark the peak of a week of Christmas events. A son to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gerhardt and a second son to Mr. and Mrs. John Webb arrived yesterday morning and evening respectively.

Mrs Gooding Wins Tribune News Tip Award

A rural Erie mother, Mrs R W Gooding of Erie R 3, wins The Tribune weekly $3 tip prize for recounting how her two year old son Richard broke through ice on a farm pond. She rescued him by pushing a board to him over the ice despite not being able to swim. The tale ran in Saturdays Left Hand Pitch column.

Hutchinson Man Killed in Crash

George L. Williams 51 of Hutchinson died Monday night when passing another car. his car collided head on with a diesel truck pulling two liquid gas trailers on K-61 six miles north of Hutchinson. Richard Wyman of Mahuska was hospitalized with abrasions and shoulder injuries. It was Kansas second traffic fatality since the Christmas holiday weekend began Friday at 6 p.m.

Death toll climbs during Yuletide holiday traffic

The Associated Press reports 521 traffic deaths during a 78 hour Christmas period ending Monday, with fires adding 83 lives and miscellaneous mishaps 85. Weather and icy roads worsened conditions across the nation, marking the first year since 1955 with over 500 highway deaths in a three day holiday span.

Two Fatalities In Kansas Over Christmas Holiday

Kansas highway fatalities dropped to two between Friday evening and Monday midnight, far below last year’s 18. Weather conditions and reduced travel played a role, with the Highway Patrol patrolling around the clock. Governor Anderson urged drivers to keep headlights on during daytime hours for safety.

13-Year-Old Girl Killed in Foss Car Crash

Mary Lou Williams, 13, of Wichita was killed when the car she rode in overturned on a county road two miles north of Foss Oklahoma. Four other teenagers in the vehicle escaped injury while Robert Scott, 17, and Linda Sue Kelley, 19, both of Clinton, were hurt but not seriously.

The Weather Bureau forecast snow breaking out in northern and eastern Kansas tonight with light snow or rain across much of the state.
