A year-old girl named Debra Lyn Wright fell gravely ill on Christmas at a farm house in Fort Scott. The family and 10 guests awakened sick. a doctor ordered windows opened and all recovered by day end. Gas fumes from furnace exhaust with bird nests blocked escape. Guests included Mr and Mrs Joe Graff and their three children.
S W Mayes 83 of 209% E Main was struck by a car on West Third Street about 6 55 am while walking in the street. He suffered a fractured left thigh and head cuts and was admitted to Neosho Memorial Hospital in fair condition. Dorothy Scott 22 of 501 W Second who was heading to work drove the car.
State accident records show fatalities from 6 p m Friday to midnight last night totaling 669 for 1956 and 585 for the same period in 1955. The figures reflect the ongoing comparison of yearly traffic dangers across Kansas.

Kathryn Adams aged six months suffocated in her crib when her foot became wedged between the bed railing and a wall. Sheriff C W Crites said the position prevented breathing. The mother Mrs James Adams and a nearby neighbor were unaware of the tragedy. the father serves at Fort Riley.

A gunman on a Greyhound bus opened fire at the Cleveland terminal injuring several and killing bus driver Leo Almerico, 49, along with 18 year old Georgeann Kartzke. The assailant was killed by police after a chase near St. Peter's church. Passengers described the attack as chaotic with multiple injuries and a bystander report of a woman fearing for safety before the shooting.
TOPEKA Col. Tom Glasscock, chief of the State Highway Patrol, urged a statewide daytime speed limit of 70 miles per hour and 60 at night in a speech to a local group. He said the 70 mph cap would be equitable for western areas and could be reduced where needed.
Harlin N. Burdin a 58 year old Kansas City Kansas man escaped serious injury when his 1953 Chrysler left the road on highway K39 a mile west of the municipal airport at 1015 yesterday. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and transporting an open bottle. Burdin was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital for cuts and bruises and to be released today. The sheriff said the car crossed two fences and struck the Gustaf Adelgren farm building before Burdin fell from the vehicle which traveled 215 feet after separation. This marked the sheriff s eighth drunk driving arrest this year.
EDGEWOOD Md A young soldier recalling his refugee past personally raised 300 for Hungarian relief at the Army chemical center. Pie Henn H Liiv and his mother and grandmother were deported from Estonia in 1944 to a German munitions plant and were displaced until 1949 when they settled in the United States. Liiv later graduated from college and led a personal fundraising drive among colleagues to aid the refugees.
