A Chanute family received a December wedding invitation then a letter noting the bride elect would wed in June to another man. The announcement says there will be no December wedding and guests expect a June invitation with one name changed. A grandparent remark and a burglary-impersonator report follow.
Kansas farmers retiring land from production next year under the soil bank will get nearly $85 million as part of federal allocations. Kansas leads states with total allocations of $750,685,000, followed by Texas about $81 million and Missouri about $21 million. Major crop shares include Wheat to Kansas $81,415,000 and Missouri $3,060,000. Corn Kansas $3,355,000. Cotton Missouri $5,763,600. Rice Missouri $39,300. Burley tobacco Missouri $85,700.
Washington reports the steel industry failed to win extended government tax relief for plant expansions. The Office of Defense Mobilization rejected the industry's request to allow rapid tax amortization on the cost of a further round of capacity growth to meet rising steel demand.
The Malibu blaze raced along the coast on its second day, burning about 30 homes and threatening Latigo Canyon as winds eased from 80 mph gusts. The 35 mile perimeter stretched from Coral Canyon to Sequit Canyon, with 27 homes confirmed lost including Ralph Edwards’s luxury beach house. Raymond Burr, Gordon Jenkins, and Charles Erskine homes remained standing. One death reported. Firefighters numbered about 1,000 battling the massive fire.

Sumner County coroner reports two separate self inflicted shootings in Wellington area. David Edward Larson 31 a Argo nia farmer was found dead at his brother Calbert’s home east of Caldwell. Donald Lee Turner 26 of Belle Plaine died in a drive in trailer. Both wounds to the left temple with a .22 caliber gun. Turner had been a four year patient at Veterans Hospital Topeka and returned home for Christmas.
Dr L B Venhaus has returned to Chanute after two years in the Army dental corps at Fort McPherson Georgia and will reopen his dental office at 915 W 3rd. He and his wife and four children moved to 517 5 S Evergreen last week. His children are Don 8 Glen 7 Jean 3 Linda 2. There is no place like home, he said on their return.
A Wichita man identified as Robert Frank Tucker was killed when his car collided with a freight train at a Rock Island crossing on the Clearwater Eas road, about 11:30 p.m. yesterday.
Kansas traffic deaths totaled 671 year to date in 1956, with 2 fatalities in the last 24 hours, compared to 586 at the same point in 1955, according to the State Accident Record Section.
Prison officials relented to allow Donald F. Wolfe to attend his mother's funeral after his escape from a Michigan prison farm. Wolfe, 25, learned his mother Mrs. Katherine Wolfe was critically ill in Los Angeles and turned himself in to St. Louis police after she died. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Jean Franklin, a 29 year old Kansas City blonde, reported being abducted by two young men who drove her toward St. Louis and back. She had been missing since Christmas noon and was found in a distressed condition. Police secured only a fragmentary account before she received medical care. Her husband Waller Franklin, a former nationally known billiard player, now promotes uranium claims.
Washington reports the Defense Department lowered the February draft quota to 14 000, down from 17 000 in each of the prior four months. The move reflects a shift in manpower requests and could affect recruitment timelines nationwide.
Preston Tucker, 53, head of the car venture that aimed to revolutionize auto manufacturing, died at a hospital in Ypsilanti Michigan yesterday. The maker of the Tucker automobile had faced high hopes and later disappointments surrounding his ambitious project.
Lt. Gen. Wheeler announced Egypt has allowed the U.N. salvage fleet to start clearing the southern end of the Suez Canal immediately. Egyptian technicians reportedly began clearing channels at Ismailia and Suez to study sunken ships while British and French salvage vessels operate from Port Said. The U.N. fleet, hiring neutral-nation vessels, will grow to 20 to 30 crafts, with some not arriving until Jan. 11.
Former President Herbert Hoover has accepted an invitation to the January 21 inauguration for President Eisenhower. Former President Harry S Truman declined the invitation. Senator Bridges announced Hoover will attend the Capitol ceremonies and Truman sent regrets. Marian Anderson and Brian Sullivan will perform, with Anderson to sing the Star Spangled Banner and Sullivan America.
Washington hotels report plenty of rooms available for the upcoming inauguration. Bourbon Dawes of the Washington Hotel Assn. notes that only three or four of 33 downtown member hotels are likely to be filled, with about 7,000 rooms used during Eisenhower's first inaugural.
Yesterday city water usage totaled 1,326,000 gallons, slightly above the 1,264,000 gallon reading from the same day last year. The prior day’s usage was 1,227,000 gallons, with seven day totals at 8,767,000 versus 9,024,000 gallons the week prior.

Mrs. Dorothy Besser, 46, was in a cab bringing her to Brackenridge Hospital for treatments when the vehicle collided. She was rushed by ambulance, treated for minor injuries, and admitted for ongoing care.
Edward Laws 14 was found dead at his Louisville home with a revolver by his feet after reportedly attempting Russian roulette following a television report of a similar death in Corbin Kentucky. Police say he may have tried the game after hearing of a Louisiana man who died in Corbin on Christmas Day.
Henry Ford established the plant in 1911 on the east edge of Kansas City. The plant will close tomorrow for a 12 mile move to Claycomo across the Missouri River. The 2,200 employees will lose no more than 24 hours of production time.
A six year old girl, Susan Jarbo, was killed when a car carrying her sister and father collided with a westbound Union Pacific passenger train at a crossing twelve miles east of Quinter, Kansas. The sister and father were seriously injured.
Postmaster Leif R. Nelson urged Cha nute residents to curb slips and falls by salting and sanding sidewalks and porches. He cited national figures showing 209 of 281 postal accidents occurred on icy surfaces and noted a $5.57 million cost for injuries in the last year. The appeal also advised curb ing loose bricks and restraining dogs to reduce hazards for mail carriers and others.

Clyde Leroy Megert 23, a Wichita service station operator, died in a Liberal hospital of injuries from an Oklahoma highway crash that killed his wife Shirley Ann. The collision occurred nine miles south of Turpin on U S 83 Monday. Their two daughters Connie Louise 3 and Toni Lynn 2 were uninjured.
Vandals damaged the home of William H. States in Ben Salem Township, painting or breaking all furniture and causing about $12,000 in losses. Police reported about nine gallons of white paint used by the intruders while States vacationed in Florida.
Former President Herbert Hoover told a New York news conference with Vice President Nixon that Hungarian refugees will add to national progress and include professionals and skilled workers. Police continued a hit and run inquiry into a parked car damage late Tuesday night. A second vehicle linked by paint scraps and bumper guards was found and identified. The owner of the second car is a Tola man with a Fort Riley connection. the serviceman may be questioned today. Other incidents include a 1951 Ford damaged at 126 N. Grant, a 1956 Olds hit at 1401 S. Central, and a 1949 Ford and 1950 Ford damaged at Elm and Lincoln.
Gray Lumber Co of 420 E Main completed incorporation procedures in Topeka. Gordon Gray named resident agent and capital set, with Mrs Gray as president and Gordon Gray as secretary treasurer. The action formalizes the family owned business.
The Kansas Industrial Development Commission completed a 44 page booklet outlining state industrial resources. It will be sent to manufacturing executives nationwide to aid plant location decisions and to provide data useful to Kansas industries and communities promoting growth.
