Plane lands safely after ocean ditch attempt

John Sleeper Dies in Iola Funeral Home Operator Crash
John Sleeper 49 a partner in an Iola funeral home and furniture store owner died in a highway crash near Olathe when the hearse he drove left Interstate 35. No other vehicle was involved. Coroner said he appeared to fall asleep at the wheel. Survived by wife Virginia and daughters Janet Jill and brother Allan. Funeral set for First Presbyterian Church in Iola. Sleeper formerly ran a General Electric store in Chanute in the late 1930s.

Al Endres, local telephone manager, says the dial switching equipment is being installed at the new building on S. Steuben. Residence numbers will be issued later. George Washington Earp 96 former cowboy and U S marshal died after a stroke at a Joplin nursing home where he had lived almost a year.
