A candlelighting ceremony from Mexico will be presented Monday night between 6 and 11 p.m. for passersby in the 600 block on North Steuben. Girl Scouts of Troop 2 will light the block with candles and perform a service as a community project.
New Jersey residents fled homes in Ramapo River Valley amid heavy rains that raised water to 20 inches around houses in Oakland. Wayne Township saw Pompton River spill into a block of summer homes prompting precautionary evacuations. By morning sun, fears of major floods eased as rainfall totals reached up to four inches.
In Topeka January 8 to 10 the Kansas agricultural convention will discuss potential surplus crops outlets and new products from research. The Kansas Wheat Commission will report on progress and explore new markets for wheat.
Jack Wood reported receiving a $50 no account check from Robert R. Williams. Police say Williams also passed a $15 check in Bartlesville. Williams is described as about 26 years old, 5 feet 9 inches, 160 pounds, with reddish brown hair. The check was received December 19. Address given was R. 2, Fredonia.
Mrs. Katie Beard, 79, of Wichita died yesterday at the State Hospital in Larned where she had been taken a month after head injuries from a crosswalk traffic accident in Wichita. She had been hospitalized there since March 21.
City police planned speed and license checks on South Santa Fe today as part of routine holiday season enforcement officials said.
Hospital records list Friday admittances including Charles Rodrigues Altoona medical Mrs Charles Julian Del Monte and others with surgical and medical cases. Dismissals Saturday include Mrs Tom Morehead and daughter Mrs Oliver Craig Eric and Glenda Willis plus Humboldt resident Mrs Harold Barnett. Police reports updated to show A O Dimon struck by a hit and run driver Thursday with Dimon identifying the car but no charges filed.
Five people from High Point North Carolina died in a early morning crash on West Virginia Route 17 about 30 miles northwest of Charleston. Victims included Mr and Mrs Joseph P Dean both 29 Marshall Harris 8 Marilyn K Harris 10 and Cheryle Elanna Harris 12. The Harris family was in a separate car ahead of the Deans. Witnesses said Mrs Dean may have been driving the 1957 convertible involved.
The Ash Grove Lime and Portland Cement Co. plans a temporary shutdown starting Jan. 4 with production to resume Feb. 3. A partial return is slated for Jan. 27 as packing and power staff stay on to handle shipments. Most workers will receive 2 to 4 weeks of paid vacation during the layoff. Slow cement demand caused storage limits, affecting nearby plant operations in Iola and Fredonia.
In Houston ten blind children met Santa Claus for the first time yesterday at the Houston Lighthouse for the Blind nursery. Their hands explored his face and beard as Mrs. Tom Robinson noted their keen other senses. Three year old Randy Turner sat on Santa's lap and asked for a car and a wagon.
London reports the death of Eric Coates, famed as the uncrowned king of light music. The Briton died in a Chichester hospital after a short illness at age 71. His suites marches ballets rhapsodies and songs are well known to British radio audiences. He once broadcast in the United States during a 1946 visit.

Archie Wood aged 61 a salesman for Rothenberg and Schloss Cigar Co Kansas City Mo was killed when his car struck a bridge and was demolished about a mile and a half west of Iola on U S 24. Wood was alone in the vehicle.
Edwin Johnson age 52 of Bucklin was killed when the automobile he rode in overturned on U S 154 four miles west of Bucklin last night.
Police reported a two car crash yesterday at 14th and Edith at 2 45 p m with damage to both vehicles. Irvin B F Herb driven car traveling north on Edith hit Lloyd Henry Whitworth's car traveling east on 14th. No injuries reported.
A rural community gathering is set for 7 30 p m Monday at Rural School. The event features student presentations led by teacher Mrs Tom Slater and music instruction by Mrs Jeff Coots.
City officials announced a January 22 hearing by the State Tax Commission on issuing no fund warrants for the Highway K39 relocation. City Manager R J Hayes said the warrants address lack of budgeted funds while also seeking budget extensions. City Engineer Paschal Grimes and airport staff discussed acquisition of 40 additional acres to satisfy FAA requirements, with about 45500 in federal funds contingent on resurfacing and line extension.
No injuries reported after a two car collision four miles north of town at 6 p m yesterday. Northbound driven by Vivian Lorraine Schaede 1010 West collided with southbound driven by Howard Barton Needham Osawatomie on US 169. Right rear fenders were damaged.
A new chill spread across the Central Gulf states while the Northwest and Northeast saw more rain. Winter begins at 8 49 p m CST. Temperatures dropped sharply in the Ohio Valley Gulf region, with showers and rising rivers in New York New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Snow flurries appeared in the Northern Lakes and Rockies as fair conditions prevailed elsewhere east of the Divide.
Mrs. Mayme E. Coleman found a small green bag containing 6119.94 dollars and checks. Police traced the funds to John D. Alter, office manager at Spencer-Faust Plymouth Inc., who had lost the bag earlier that day. Alter awarded a reward by the finder.
A Tulsa firm, Hannaford Construction Co., was the low bidder at 268909 dollars for a practical arts building at Southwest Missouri State College. Seven other bidders competed as the college advances a six-building program. The college will open bids January 30 for a proposed 875000 dollar fine arts building.

Chico California reports seventy one year old William A Gardenhire told children he was not Santa Claus and learned his phone line had been crossed with Chico Junior Chamber of Commerce calls to talk with Santa. He apologized and thanked the children for renewing his faith in God and Christmas.

Henderson residents are selling Charles Vargo's Christmas trees to help his family after the 28 year old unemployed father of two was killed in a two truck crash on Tuesday while en route to collect trees for Christmas money. Proceeds go to the Vargo family.
Five cases of beer and two boxes of cigars were reported stolen from the Eagles Club three miles south of town. Undersheriff Jack Reynolds led the investigation, noting a door had been forced open. Warren Babcock first reported the break in, saying it occurred last night.
Erie burglars broke a window to enter the Beard Oil Company office and stole $104 that had been hidden there. Sheriff Lee Montgomery said the break-in was reported at 7 a.m. today.

Sheriffs report a car skidded 100 feet and struck a moving freight train near Melvern Kansas. Donna Secrec, age 16, was killed and three others injured in the collision.
