Schools Reject Merger Plan
In Chase County Kansas six rural high school districts voted 600 to 299 against a plan to consolidate into one county wide district. The proposal, studied for a year by a volunteer committee, would have created economies. The districts voted no individually, with counts: Clements 43 to 27, Saf fordville 90 to 45, Strong City 171 to 57, Cedar Point 80 to 64, Elmdale 101 to 81, Matfield Green 115 to 24. A majority was required from four districts to implement. The county, sparsely populated, would have been the only one in the state with a single community high school. Current enrollments ranged from 27 to 92 students. consolidation would have yielded 250 to 300 students.
