Clinton Farmer Drowns in Well

Solon Oliver Mitchell, 51, drowned at his Clinton Kansas farm home when he fell into a well while doing morning chores. A search found the loosened boards and the body was recovered by Lawrence fire department. Douglas County coroner Dr. Byron Walters ruled the death accidental.

Silver Dollars Welcome New Penny in Pittsburg

AP reports the Silver Dollars of Pittsburg welcomed a daughter named Penny last week. Mr and Mrs Dollar considered Gold but chose Penny due to inflation and the gold market. The family also has two children, Linda 14 and Silver 12.

Christmas church events planned across the area

Numerous churches schedule Christmas programs and services starting this Sunday through next week. The Nazarene presents a three act play Seeing The Star at 7 30 p.m. The First Baptist showcases a film That I May Worship Him at 7 30 p.m. and a youth-led scene. The Zion Lutheran Living Nativity runs 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Friday with a children's program Saturday at 7 30 p.m.

Kennedy names Kennedy brother as attorney general and Dillon as treasury chief

President elect John F. Kennedy announces his brother Robert F. Kennedy as attorney general and Douglas Dillon as secretary of the Treasury. Dillon, 51, is current undersecretary of state and a Republican. The move marks the first time a brother serves in a U.S. Cabinet.

5 Per cent pay hike for service employees

Tulsa AP reports Service Pipe Line Co announces a 5 percent wage increase for non union employees below executive level across 15 states effective Sunday. The company says meetings are being arranged with unions and similar raises will be offered to other employees.

Two Jetliner Collisions Kill 124 in New York Area

In a snowstorm two jet airliners collided near New York City, United Air Lines flight 826 from Chicago to Idlewild and TWA flight 226 from Dayton to LaGuardia. One survivor was reported among 125 aboard. sixteen buildings burned as fires spread through Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Civil rights hearing addresses discrimination in Kansas towns

Witnesses from Fort Scott Chanute and other southeast Kansas towns testified before the Kansas Advisory Committee of the U S Commission on Civil Rights about discrimination in employment. Other claims cited included housing and access to facilities while public accommodations and law enforcement were said to be equal. The Chanute hearing, part of a four state inquiry, wraps today after a morning session and featuring businessmen educators and city officials.

Santa Claus Real Wins $100 in Silver Dollar Day

Larry Gragg a Chanute Junior College student and basketball player won the top prize of $100 in the final Silver Dollar Day drawing at Newcastle Cafe. He was in the cafe before a Hutchinson game when his name was announced. Two other winners received $10 and $5 prizes. Gragg, 20, from Topeka, had been worried about Christmas funds and car repairs.

Neosho County Residents Join UNESCO Mexico Tour

Fourteen Neosho County residents plus ten others depart from the Tioga Hotel in Chanute at 7 am for a two week UNESCO sponsored bus tour of Mexico. Stops include Dallas Laredo Patzcuaro Mexico City and Monterrey with stays in Patzcuaro three days and Mexico City two days. Price is $155 per person with up to $200 allowed in purchases and return to Chanute planned for 6 pm on December.

New Pastor For Friends At Savonburg

Savonburg The Rev. D Bertil Gustafson of Olsburg will begin his ministry Sunday as the new pastor of the Friends Home Evangelical Lutheran church. Artillery fire hits the capital as Savannakhet high command says it will take two more days to clear pockets of resistance.
