The Mariner 2 craft made radio contact with Venus and two radiometer instruments were aimed to study surface temperature and atmospheric features as it nears the planet. Other experiments will track magnetic fields radiation cosmic dust and solar plasma while radiometer data is relayed from Goldstone California.
INDEPENDENCE Mo AP Billy Bray four months ago found strapped down in a crib and abused by his parents. The mother Mary Bray faced the judge with relief after therapy and support helped restore Billy to the home under supervision. The family says they are happier, and Mrs Bray reports renewed love for Billy and a calmer household despite ongoing challenges.
Air Force Capt. Joe W Kittinger Jr and civilian astronomer William C White returned to New Mexico after a 18 hour 32 minute ascent to 81500 feet. They launched near Holloman Air Force Base and landed 150 miles west near Deming.

In Fairway Kansas two youths aged 20 and 19 were questioned after John R Keach a prominent lawyer was found shot to death in his home. Authorities from Johnson County sheriff's office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation questioned them after their arrest near the Keach residence at a downtown hotel where they live.
Topeka AP presidents of state colleges discussed possible fee increases as universities face financial pressures. KU and Kansas State leaders opposed higher out of state charges, while KU officials outlined a plan to raise some fees to support salaries. The meeting approved graduate school deans appointments, a dormitory study, and library serials publishing.
