Left Hand high school seniors prepared for graduation by being measured for caps and gowns and receiving enrollment forms for the second semester. Enrollment complete in homeroom, with credits checked against graduation requirements and electives chosen. Second semester starts January 23. local letters from Korea students seek 15 day Christmas work in Chanute.
Ozro B. Willard aged 53 longtime Parsons Sun mechanical superintendent died in a local hospital after several months illness. He served over 35 years with the paper and 30 years as its mechanical head. He led the Kansas Mechanical Conference as former president and served on its board. Survivors include his widow and two sons. Funeral set for 3 p.m. Friday in Parsons.
In New Orleans, Jack Milton Campbell 44 former sailor and hotel owner confessed to strangling his wife Mary Wilhelm Campbell 56 after a day of drinking and prolonged nagging. Campbell described the marriage began last August after they met in a bar. He is jailed on murder charges. James M Campbell 87, Denver Insurance executive, is listed as adoptive father.
Detroit endures a two week strike that shut down the News Times and Free Press. Radio and TV newscasts expand and a hotel newsroom supplies local copy to stations. Local ads surge while retailers report weak Christmas business and other papers fill gaps.
Santa will be at Main Street from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday as Chanute Retail Council announces the last pre Christmas visit. He will inspect stores and note Christmas buying volumes before returning Christmas night for the city wide gift distribution program. Stores will remain open Thursday evening.
Cotton County Sheriff Bill Dyer and three assistants, all local farmers, built a bootlegging interception operation from Wichita Falls to Oklahoma. This week they sold 84 cases of whisky gin and vodka and 48 cases of wine to the J. R. Ray Co in Dallas, with proceeds going to the county school fund.
Burns fatality reported from Kansas City Kansas. Leroy Burlingame 75 year old farmer from Chetopa Kansas died yesterday due to burns suffered November 16.

ERIE G C Freeby was elected president of the Neosho County Fair Association at a directors meeting. Charles C. Carter Chanute became vice president Ivan Green Erie secretary. Terms are one year. Mahlon Morley the county agricultural agent was appointed delegate to the Kansas State Board of Agriculture meeting at Topeka in January with Talmage Engels as alternate. Tentative dates for the 1956 county fair are Aug 22 to 25. An association membership drive is planned for early next year.
Robert N. Allen president of Chanute Building and Loan Association was named to the Kansas Savings and Loan League legislative committee. Seven Kansans will serve on the panel, which meets in Topeka during legislative sessions to discuss laws affecting savings and loan operations.
Neosho County Board of Hospital Trustees discussed reserving parking for Neosho Memorial Hospital staff physicians. Delayed steel doors and windows for the new wing push completion to January. Routine business occurred with administrator Mrs. Elsie Ellis and board members present.
Topeka records show Kansas traffic fatalities in the last 24 hours and year to date. In 1955 the total is 548, compared with 574 in the same period of 1954.
President Eisenhower backs a billion dollar defense boost and a possible tax cut fight in a stormy election year Congress. The plan includes B52 production, jet interceptors, and missile development. Debate centers on a 35 billion dollar defense budget and foreign aid amid calls for a balanced budget and continued financing for highways and school construction.
The Home Appliance Co announces a formal opening of its new store at 2 E. Main over the next three days. Owners Paul Harris and Charles Mussulman invite public inspection with three prizes to be awarded. The firm moves from 108 E. Main after five years, with remodeling and a rear addition completed.
In Maysville Kentucky Mrs. Rachel Young Lyons aged 69 died of a heart attack yesterday and an hour later her husband W Lance Lyons aged 74 also died of a heart attack. Double funeral services will be held tomorrow.
AP reports Christmas shopping boomed in major cities with shoppers buying gadgets luxury goods and unique gifts. Stores from Baltimore to New York and beyond noted higher spending despite cautious cases, with payroll gains boosting late year trade and several merchants touting extraordinary offerings.
At Fort Smith Arkansas two men Lee Sivley and Donald Daggs remain trapped as rescue teams dig toward an eight by fifteen foot pit under the Arkansas Waste Paper Co plant. Eight hours into the effort the shaft initially collapsed twice and another cave-in followed as rescuers pulled out Hoyt Kirkpatrick and an unnamed man.
The Soviet Union issued a reply to the December protest over Berlin’s four power status. Ambassador G M Pushkin delivered the note to U S British and French commands in West Berlin. The Bonn Allied embassies received the notes message contents not disclosed.
President Eisenhower urges Americans to honor the Bill of Rights on the day of observance. He cites freedom of speech press religion and assembly, protection against searches, right to fair trial, and right to privacy as core liberties to defend and renew nationwide.

Adult 4-H club project leaders from 15 counties attended a district tractor maintenance school at the Memorial Building. Speakers included John Ferguson, Dale Cannon, John Hanna, Kenneth Mebold, and Jay Taylor from Standard Oil. Talmage Engels organized the event with a noon luncheon at the Silver Grill.
