A group visits Dr. Burkman’s home and delivers a large package to Dr. Richard Good. Inside is a young woman in a festive outfit who greets Dr. Good with a Merry Christmas. Dr. Burkman plans extra security before attending a neighborhood festivity at the Good home.
The Chanute area logged a sub zero low of two degrees below zero, beating the former record of one degree above zero set in 1958. Temperatures climbed to 16 at 1 pm before a forecast of rising temps tonight near ten above zero and near freezing tomorrow. Sub-zero weather grips Kansas with statewide lows from five below to minus two in Topeka.
The Army's Nike Zeus anti missile system scored its second intercept of a target warhead launched by an Atlas ICBM over the Pacific. A second Zeus in salvo failed due to a second stage defect. Blood donations during the Red Cross bloodmobile visit totaled 166 pints, well below the two day target of 240 pints. Mrs. Lee Embry announced 106 pints were given yesterday to add to 60 the day before, with 223 potential donors scheduled and several no-shows or cancellations reducing the total. Donors ranged from first gallon to three gallon givers, including Alfred Serrato and Mrs. Leslie Cox at three gallons and several two gallon donors such as Chester Jones Jr. and Tommy Baughn.
A proposed one cent gas tax rise and higher motor vehicle fees would fund a 15 year highway plan to lift Kansas roads to about 70 percent capacity. The plan, prepared by Wilbur Smith and Associates, would raise $14.42 million yearly from highway users and $3,000 per county for engineers.
