City commission will require tavern operators to appear in person for next year’s beer license renewals. Other license holders must follow standard procedures by December 31. Meeting set for December 21 at 7 p.m. with no special session planned.
Chanute elementary schools present Christmas music under H Howard Hollenshead at 8 PM Friday in the Memorial Building. Senior High and Junior College music departments host two programs, one tomorrow before the Christian Womens Fellowship and another Friday at 2 30 PM during the Senior Citizens Christmas party, with about 500 elementary students in grades one through six joining.
Two Chanute families named Don Elder each welcomed a newborn son at Neosho Memorial Hospital over the weekend. Relatives were confused by the identical names and addresses as flowers and calls went to the wrong Mrs Elders. Meanwhile, local activities include Chanute school Christmas events and a math trip to Kansas City.
Blood collections for the quarterly Red Cross blood mobile in the community lag as the first day yielded 58 pints and by 11 a.m. today only 70 pints had been donated. A total of 85 donors were scheduled, with the First Methodist church center open until 2 15 p m for the final day. The goal was 120 pints per day, two days for 240 pints.
Erie sheriff reports exposure as the cause of death for Wayne Vance 42 of rural Erie. Autopsy led by county coroner Dr R J Burkman Cha nute determined the final cause after his body was found in a roadside ditch southeast of the town. Vance had been missing since November 26 following an earlier search.
A bank in Columbus Kansas was robbed by a man about 6 feet 2 inches tall, age around 32, wearing a World War I era brown coat and knitted hood. He entered as the cashier and assistant cashier were at the window and demanded cash, leaving with only currency from drawers and no silver. The heist occurred with the robber escaping on foot and a car possibly waiting nearby. Departing, the robber’s face was only partly visible and he left the scene in cold weather.
Police jailed a 14 year old after neighbors reported a disturbance at a acquaintance’s apartment. He was kept pending disposition by the county juvenile officer. A juvenile court hearing was scheduled tomorrow in a prior case involving egg and tomato smearing on Chanute minister’s cars. He said he had been drinking whiskey but was unfit to answer questions.
Detectives probe a break in at Louis Lieberbaum’s Hewlett Harbor residence. Loss ranges from 5000 to 10000 dollars in cash 2000 to 3000 dollars in bonds and about 15000 dollars in jewelry. The couple left a German shepherd secured while they dined out and found a 200 pound wall safe ripped from the wall.
Topeka traffic death log reports 24 hours to 9 am Monday shows 1 fatality for December 1962. Year to date total 557 deaths, compared with 519 for the comparable 1961 period.
Los Angeles reports that 31 year old Howard W Addison, inmate at Chino Institution for Men, vanished after being taken to an artificial limb shop for a new leg. He told a guard he wanted to test it by strolling the hall, then exited through a back door with the limb, while serving a six month to ten year sentence for bad check passing in San Diego County.
A 1962 Nash driven by Mrs. Gene Orr received about 250 damage after being struck from behind by taxi driver James W. Leroy. The impact pushed the Orr car into a second Nash driven by Mrs. C. C. Winans. Taxi damage was about 75 with no damage listed for the Winans vehicle. A second report noted an earlier 26 W Main collision and another incident involving a parked car in Garfield.
Bitter cold and heavy snowfall hit much of the United States, with storms in the Northeast for a fifth day. Snowdrifts up to 20 feet, hundreds of school closures, and dozens of deaths marked the storm as temperatures plunged, roads froze, and travel ground to a halt from Montana to Florida.
