London news reports Henry Ferrie a 38 year old janitor who tattooed his face after a quarrel with girlfriend Tilly Farrell 40. He shows off a butterfly on his nose a tree on his forehead a snake on his left cheek and a dragon on his right cheek saying the tattoos are permanent and he may join a circus to cope with the breakup.
Fire of undetermined origin wrecked the Rok A Chair Manufacturing Co in Coffeyville early today. Fire Chief Cal Durand put the damage at 38000 dollars, with 300 new chairs among the contents. Three nearby buildings suffered damage.
Howard Wilson reported a clock and a man's leather travel kit stolen from his store around 11 30 a m yesterday. The theft occurred at 624 S Evergreen.
Baron the 3-year-old German shepherd guarded a La Mirada liquor store, obeying a command to attack during a holdup. A robber shot Baron as he leaped at the thief, leaving the dog paralyzed. He remains at a veterinary hospital as doctors decide on possible surgery pending recovery.
The Census Bureau estimated the U.S. population at 172,327,000 as of November 1, including armed forces overseas. This total rose by 21,194,000 since 1950, a 14 percent increase, and was 3,035,000 higher than the November 1, 1956 estimate, a 1.8 percent rise.
The Galt Ocean Mile Hotel near Fort Lauderdale plans a December 19 formal opening and has ordered Florida’s largest Christmas tree, a 55 foot tall, three ton specimen. It will be shipped from New Hampshire on a 60 000 pound trailer.

Hazel Bennett Baker resigns as public relations director of Larned State Hospital after six years, effective January 1. The notice states her departure from a Kansas state facility and names no successor.
Gov George Docking and Rep Marion Matthews agreed frills in state government should be eliminated. They discussed budget savings and a review of school budgets while Matthews aimed to protect essential services and consider salary adjustments.

A design for a new Sedan Kansas post office has been accepted by the General Services Administration. The approved lease purchase project by Glen E Benedic k of Wichita is expected to cost 220 500 dollars and provides nearly 9 000 square feet for the post office and Agriculture Department field units.
Sen Mansfield reports NATO is deteriorating and Eisenhower must lead in Paris to transform the alliance from a symbolism into a true mutual defense body. He urges a formal NATO scientific pool as a first step toward re making the organization. Senator Green cautions against overstatement of collapse.
Kansas weather readings showed a rapid climb with Topeka recording 10 degrees at midnight and 20 by daybreak. Forecast calls for fair skies today with warmer temperatures, partly cloudy and mild Friday, lows near 20 to 25 and highs in the 50s.
Wichita. Lawrence E. Long 56 of Wichita died after a two car crash that left him with only superficial injuries. Police said Long suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead on arrival at a Wichita hospital. Coroner Dean Bratt ordered a post mortem. Long, formerly of Grinnell Iowa, was a passenger in a car driven by Thomas D. Puryear 55 of Wichita. the other car was driven by Donald E. Lessender 20 of Wichita. Neither driver was hurt.
A discharged Army serviceman on the way home for Christmas died when his car crashed into a culvert east of Augusta. Joe Dean Page 27 Tulsa was killed in the crash near Augusta.
