New US 169 Highway Opens Between Morehead and North Cherryvale
The State Highway Commission reports the new US 169 route between Morehead and about 12 miles north of Cherryvale is open to traffic. Some shoulder work and guard rails remain, with about a week to finish in good weather. The project eliminates three curves and dangerous junctions, and includes a traffic interchange with US 160. Roberts Construction Co. of Lincoln, Nebraska, was the paving contractor.

Four Die in Fort Smith Area Coal Mine Blast
A Peerless Coal Co No 3 mine explosion in the Excelsior Field near Hackett and Greenwood killed four miners and injured two. Dead are George Simmons of Greenwood and L D Sewell Gene Moore and Joe Martin of Paris. Frank Miller of Charleston and Kendrick Richardson of Fort Smith were injured. Electric Shock Fatal To Volunteer Fireman
PRATT William Roy Shafer, 25, collapsed and died after receiving a shock from a bare electric wire while helping extinguish a roadside farmhouse fire. He warned owner Emnett Carr about a dangerous wire when an arc jumped about six inches to his hand and he died moments later.
