Storm Snow Blamed for Dozen Deaths Across Southwest

A major snowstorm blamed for over a dozen deaths swept from the central Rockies through the Southwest. El Paso Texas buried under 6 to 8 inches of snow, Marfa isolated, roads icy, power lines down, and communications failed. Ham radio contact reached two days after the outage.

Construction Starts On Coyville Bridge

Fredonia B and B Industries of St Paul has begun building a new 24 foot wide bridge over the Verdigris River a mile north of Coyville on the county road to Toronto Dam. The $57,906 project replaces the Marr steel truss bridge and eases heavy traffic from the dam.

Two Plead Guilty In Bank Robberies Involving Two States

U S District Judge Ross Rizley sentenced Ernest Ray Tillman and Robert Gaylan Wyatt to 20 years each for bank robberies in Sentinel Oklahoma and Walton Kansas last summer. The heists totaled twenty two thousand dollars.

High Court Denies Wilson Appeal in Death Case

Kansas Supreme Court refused Earl Wilson’s request to withdraw his appeal while he seeks clemency from Gov elect John Docking. The court also upheld Lowell Lee Andrews’s murder conviction and death sentence for killing his parents and sister Jennie Marie. Andrews, 19 at the time, shot his family. the court found premeditation and rejected insanity and trial-error claims.

Weiner Hurt in Night Highway Crash Near City Limit

Carl Weiner III of 823 S Highland was hurt in a traffic crash on US 169 about 12:15 a.m. a half mile south of the city limits when his 1960 Ford collided with Patrick A. Legge’s 1952 Chevrolet. Weiner suffered a broken nose and facial injuries. Legge was uninjured.

Plastic Bag Causes Wichita Tot's Death

A 22 month old boy Timothy Keith Plamann died after a plastic bag adhered to his face in a Wichita bedroom. Deputy Coroner Jim Bratt ruled suffocation as the cause after an autopsy. The child was found by his mother after she returned from the clothesline.

Freezing Rain Closes Roads Across Eastern Kansas

Freezing rain coated highways and sidewalks in eastern Kansas early today, creating hazardous conditions. The Weather Bureau expects rising temperatures to melt the glaze today but warns of possible additional glaze tonight or Sunday morning, with moisture varying across the state from traces to 0.7 inches. Highs likely in the 30s and tonight’s lows about 20s.

Farmer Howard Jennings Found Dead in Deep Well

The body of 51 year old dairy farmer Howard B Jennings was discovered in a 60 foot well on his Stanley Kansas farm Friday night. He disappeared Thursday morning after apparently slipping while repairing a surface leak. Sheriff Lynn Thomas said he fell into the well and died. A deputy lowered via a manhole and firemen pumped about 15 feet of water before the body was recovered.
