Police Warn Firms After Bogus Checks
Police Chief Lige Matlock warned Chanute businesses to beware of counterfeit checks. Four forged checks totaling about 70 dollars have been passed this season, with two youths involved. One suspect, 15 to 17, used checks payable to John Simpson and Wayne Umbarger, cashing small amounts at a motor supply and a grocery. A second suspect, about 50, 5 ft 8, 150 pounds, used checks payable to Hugh Johnson and another signature, cashing at an auto store and a liquor shop. Authorities suspect the older man is a known forger seen in Chanute during Christmas.

Anonymous Letter Warns Of Poison Candy In Great Bend
Jim Hartman received an anonymous warning not to eat candy on November 7 in Great Bend Kansas. A package arrived the next day containing homemade candy. Hartman brought both letter and candy to police. the candy tested by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation contained enough arsenic to kill a person. The letter claimed a man was behind the plot and noted Hartman. Authorities are investigating with postal officials. Hartman had recently moved from Boise Idaho and works at a filling station.
