Radar checks cite 15 motorists on US 169 near Chanute

Bomber Crashes At Sea Near Kauai Points
A two engine Navy patrol bomber crashed during maneuvers 26 miles east of Kauai point about 40 miles northwest of Oahu. Three of ten aboard were rescued by submarine Bashaw and identified as Lt K C Guedel Lt (jg) E J O Malley and Lt (jg) Robert S Smith. Fiery crash at junction near Abilene kills four soldiers
Four persons believed to be military personnel from Ft. Riley were killed in a head on collision at the junction of State Route 43 and U.S. 40 twelve miles east of Abilene. Two identified victims are Specialist 2nd Class Jackie J. Smith and Pfe Wallace F. Marcum, both 23, with families listed in Independence Kansas Freeport Illinois and Muncie Indiana. The other two victims were not positively identified. Bus driver John Rice of Felton Truck Lines, who witnessed the crash, reported the car crossed into his lane after a curve. Rice had minor injuries.

Elm Tree to Move at Senior High School Grounds
Plans advance to transplant an English elm on the east side of the Senior High School building to make way for a new music wing. The tree, 35 feet tall and 14 to 16 inches in diameter, rests over a four ton earthen base and will be moved after a hard freeze by a winch and boom system. The elm, likely planted between 1930s and 1942, was one of many donated by C. D. Blackwood and set out by George Cox in memory of his twin brother. A hidden 2.5 inch pipe found around the trench was cut to facilitate lifting the tree without disturbing roots.
