Mother and daughter beaten to death in car
In Melbourne Florida a mother Patricia Van Eeghen and her 7 year old daughter Phyllis were found beaten to death in their car in front of a funeral home. Police identify the victims as the missing wife and child of Philip Van Eeghen a laundry operator who reported them missing at 6 30 a m. Sheriff Williams said Eeghen broke down when told of the deaths and could not be questioned further. The chief noted the bodies appeared beaten and cut with a sharp instrument.

Burns Fatal for Mrs. Durland at Neosho Memorial
Mrs. Martha Ann Durland 88 died this morning at Neosho Memorial Hospital from burns after a gas burner accident at 517 West Oliver. She was born November 1 1867 in Mount Morris Illinois and had lived in Neosho 43 years. Widowed since 1918, she leaves two daughters and six grandchildren plus six great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by Wilson Johnson Mortuary are incomplete.

Patrick Joseph McDermott twenty three of West Mineral Kansas was killed in Alpena Michigan yesterday when he slipped from a bucket lowered inside a 55 foot smokestack at the Huron Portland Cement plant. He worked for Custodis Construction Co Chicago. Authorities say the bucket gave way and he fell inside the chimney.

Bodies of Two Men Found Frozen in Joplin
Two unidentified men were found dead in different city areas of Joplin Missouri both frozen. One body lay in a west side drainage ditch partly clothed with head knee and hand wounds while the other was found in a wrecked car at a salvage yard in the east. Coroner W W Hurst suggested a vehicle strike could be possible in the first case and police ponder whether both deaths were from freezing.

In Chicago a 64 year old brewer and former mob financial adviser Alex Louis Greenberg was shot dead on a South Side street as he and his wife prepared to enter their car after dining. Police questioned hoodlums as the wallet card identified him as president of the Canadian Ace Brewing Co. connected since 1922. Greenberg had appeared in 1948 as a witness in a New York trial identifying Capone associates convicted of extortion in the film industry.

Draft Call for 6 000 by Army in February
The Army issued a draft call for 6 000 men in February the smallest quota since Selective Service resumed in 1950 after the Korea War began. The Defense Department said the earlier 8 000 Army call for January was cut to 6 000.
