Pamila Wells delivered Gina Suzenne Wells in an automobile borrowed from her baby's uncle while en route from Iola to Topeka for Thanksgiving. The mother, then 21, was assisted by her mother Ruth Hoggatt of Iola. This was the first child for Pamila and her husband Bob Wells.
Mexican-Americans at the White House hunger conference urged 3000 delegates to fast for the rest of the session in protest of President Nixon's keynote speech and the conference's direction. They asked others to deposit meal tickets in a hallway box as the three day meeting ends Thursday.
Searchers removed 38 bodies from the debris of a fire charred home for the aged in Notre Dame du Lac Quebec. The operation paused after about four hours in falling snow as police met welfare officials to determine if more victims remain in the ruins.
Between 700 and 899 men from the 69th Infantry Brigade depart Fort Carson to their home armories with Brigadier General John Breidentha predicting most will be back in their towns between Friday and the following Tuesday. Kansas officials report a flood of questions about the new draft lottery system and outline state quotas and timelines for January calls.

Three U S helicopter crewmen released after 142 months in captivity in North Korea are to depart for the United States around 8 p m EST after a night in an Army hospital. An admission signed by a U S representative claiming the helicopter was captured in criminal violation of North Korean territory was later said to be for freeing the prisoners.
Dr. James Brown, director of the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital, laments the State Board of Health decision to discontinue mobile chest X ray units due to cost. He notes about 20 percent of lung cancer cases are found via routine screenings, and last year 65,000 people were X rayed without charge while 20 percent of 240 new TB cases were detected by the mobile units. Brown urges a $1 patient fee to fund self support and preserve early cancer detection.
The House Appropriations Committee advances a $69.95 billion defense bill trimming $5.32 billion from Nixon’s request. It preserves $779.4 million for Safeguard, proposes axing $3.82 billion in other programs, urges MBT 70 abandonment, and cuts $2 million for biological weapons and $10.5 million in gas warfare cuts.
Dora Mae Brooks 25 of Chanute was bound over to district court on first degree murder and assault with intent to kill charges for the Nov 9 knife slaying of Kenneth Pulley 29 and stabbing of Kathy Sweeney 23 at Pulley's brother Geralds Iola home. Sweeney testified she was stabbed while fleeing.
Neosho Junior College trustees discussed securing more funding for vocational training from state and federal sources. McMurray urged coordination of programs, while the Kansas Association of Public Community Junior Colleges pledged continued support for a holdover bill adding 5 per credit hour and 30 dollar capital outlay per full time student.

In Topeka the joint Kansas tax structure committee voted to retain the business inventory tax and to strengthen its enforcement. Dealers and retailers had urged a gross receipts tax or other changes, warning abrupt enforcement could push some merchants toward bankruptcy. The measure will proceed to the next legislature.
On December 1 city housing officer Ralph Caldwell issued four voluntary demolition permits the first of their kind. A fifth condemned building owner agreed last week to pay for its demolition. The vacant houses lie at 401 W Ist 1101 N Santa Fe 613 N Steuben 817 N Evergreen and 615 N Steuben.
