Ott Givens 91 of Blue Creek was rear ended while driving his car. He was admitted to a hospital, examined by a physician for the first time, inoculated, given his first pill, and discharged home after treatment for cuts to his hand and face.
AP reports on a West Side gun battle as police attempted to serve a warrant at a building near Black Panther offices. Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were killed. seven others injured as authorities investigated charges of illegal firearm possession against Hampton and Bobby Rush.
Raymond H. Lapin files federal suit alleging bad faith dismissal by President Nixon to clear his post at the Federal National Mortgage Association. He had refused resignations while praising the tenure and claims an unlawful scheme. In Caracas, salvage teams recover bodies from Air France crash with 62 aboard, no survivors.
Nineteen of Kansas 40 district judges outside the four largest counties were assigned Wednesday to Sedgwick County to relieve its caseload. They will serve until final disposition of their assignments, including Robert Stadler Iola William P. Meek Columbus and Don Musser Pittsburg. A separate measure would provide 2 million annually to private nonsectarian schools, funding 2000 per teacher per year, for study by a House Senate subcommittee.
President Nixon said Judge Clement F. Haynsworth Jr. will stay as chief judge of the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and praised his resolve after the failed Supreme Court nomination. Haynsworth thanked Nixon, noting support from judges and the bar, while weighing the Senate defeat.

Clarence Babcock 64 of Altoona was found dead this morning slumped over a tractor fender after a presumed heart attack. A passerby, Mr. McDonald, reported the scene at 10 01 a m. The tractor lay in a ditch near a fence line one mile west and 1 75 north of Thayer. Babcock worked for Charles Deweese and the body was taken to Robinson Funeral Home Thayer with Dr E C Bryan of Erie attending the scene.
Army investigators examine a possible coverup tied to the My Lai massacre in South Vietnam. Capt. Ernest Medina, the unit commander, is being questioned in the inquiry.
President Nixon warned he would reconvene Congress for a special session on December 26 if lawmakers do not finish all appropriation measures. Republican leaders, Sen. Hugh Scott and Rep. Gerald Ford, said Nixon would stay in session beyond holidays to complete seven or more pending bills including Labor HEW, Defense, OEO and foreign aid.
