A flock of birds jumped from a 12,000 volt line and caused a bow like twang that touched a lower line and shorted out. Pacific Gas & Electric officials said the outage cut power to about 24,000 homes, a hospital and the Hall of Justice for about 45 minutes on Monday morning in Redwood City California.
President Nixon called for a massive national effort to curb hunger and improve nutrition at a White House Conference. He backed three congressional measures to nearly erase poverty as a cause of malnutrition, including an income floor for all American families that would aid about 25 million people.
Members of the Ford County Taxpayers Association vote to withhold the first half of 1969 property tax payments until after the Kansas Legislature convenes. About 125 to 150 protesters oppose a 50 to 100 percent rise from reassessment set at 30 percent of true value.
A three story wooden home for the aged on Lake Temiscouata burned to the ground in Noterre-Du-Law Quebec. Police said up to 55 residents were unaccounted for though about twenty escaped. The building housed 69 elderly patients, 17 of whom were crippled, plus around 10 staff members.
The Interstate Commerce Commission acts to curb disruption by authorizing field supervisors to approve on the spot motor re routing of commerce and passengers if a nationwide strike begins at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. Washington AP report details the first Selective Service lottery for the draft age cohort 19 to 26 born Sept 14 with last names starting J. The 365 dates were drawn from a jar to determine future draft order, followed by a second draw for alphabetic grouping led by the letter J.
The city planning commission voted to recommend annexation of the Burris Brothers Addition and most of Santa Fe Park. The plan Includes the park highway right of way and the Western Petrochemical plant. Affected residents seek better water and sewer services and the plan will go to the city commission for action before year end. The panel also urged rezoning nine acres west of Plummer for business use and studied overall zoning revisions.
The District 413 board of education voted unanimously to disregard a directive from the Kansas State Department of Education requiring schools to submit their student conduct policy for review. Superintendent Buford Fisher urged challenging the state over the move as a policy overstep.
A 16 year old was arrested at 12 30 a m for driving while intoxicated and curfew violation plus careless driving speeding 70 mph in a 30 mile zone and failure to stop. A 15 year old passenger faced intoxication and curfew charges. The driver was released to parents after bond set at 110 dollars and the younger boy after juvenile officer was contacted.
A two day workshop for tax consultants of southeast Kansas drew about 250 attendees at the Central Park Community Building. Officials from Kan sas State University Extension Service and several state and federal agencies attended. The 21st annual Kansas tax institute covered law changes and forms with Dr John Schlender in charge.
A Pacific storm off Hawaii sent waves up to 50 feet crashing into Oahu. Three people were missing and hundreds evacuated as the surf damaged homes and caused a large power outage. A Coast Guard crew of 19 was marooned on Tern Island after their lookout post fell victim to the sea.
Area forecast calls for sunny mild weather Wednesday with west to north winds up to 15 mph. Tonight will be fair and cool with lows around 39. Highs Wednesday expected from 55 to 60 with northern sections cooler. No precipitation forecast. Temperature readings from 60 to 65 today, 20s tonight, 50s to 60s Wednesday. Top Monday highs ranged from 56 in Olathe to 63 in Dodge City.
Donors gave 198 pints of blood in a 62 hour Red Cross bloodmobile collection at American Legion post 301 N. Evergreen. The drive, sponsored by the Legion, began at 2 p.m. with a quota of 200 pints and nine deferrals reported.
