The July consumer price index reached 110.2, up 0.1 percent led by meat and potato price surges. Beef rose 1.2 percent and pork 7.5 percent while potatoes jumped 10 percent. overall food and housing costs rose despite tax cuts and lower clothing prices.
A 17 year old boy received transient lodging after a missed meeting with his mother. At 5 a.m. a woman, an out-patient from a California state hospital, was also given temporary lodging. Police said the mother had been in town and is now in Joplin. Arrangements were made to send the boy to Joplin and the woman back to the California hospital.
Tornadoes and whetting winds up to 100 mph lashed the Midwest harming Illinois Iowa Indiana and Wisconsin. Two deaths were reported one in Iowa and one in Illinois with at least 99 injured and millions in damage.
The Senate education subcommittee approved a five year $5.5 billion higher education bill by a 9-0 vote. It expands aid to needy students and supports colleges facing enrollment growth. A national teacher corps and $290 million for construction are key provisions. President Johnson praised the measure as a landmark for education.
