Hurricane Cleo battered Miami with 115 mph winds and toppled broadcasting towers. Stores shattered, fires sparked, and streets littered with debris as the storm moved north along the Florida coast. One looter was critically wounded. a warehouse worth half a million dollars was destroyed. Cape Kennedy prepared for a major impact as the eye passed north.

Car-Horse Crash Near Galesburg
A 1955 Mercury driven by Harvey McKinley, 18, of San Diego, struck a horse east of Galesburg last night. Damage estimated at 400 dollars. McKinley and passenger Linda Miller of rural Galesburg were uninjured. The collision occurred about 11:45 on the county blacktop three and three fourths miles east of Galesburg. The horse, owned by Bill Blair of rural Erie, was injured but not destroyed.

Tires Recovered in Howard Carder Station Theft Case
Acting on a tip, authorities recovered four new tires believed stolen from the Howard Carder filling station. Found in a river-bottom ditch east of town, the tires bring total recovered to eight. Investigation continues and a principal suspect with a bench warrant remains at large.

Park Deer Is Killed In Traffic Crash
A Santa Fe Park deer was killed after four escaped from a pen and was struck by a car on the highway east of the park near midnight. Driver Gus Carlburg notified police. Parks superintendent Clem Keller and game protector Bud Audiss coordinated the dressing and freezing of the meat. Carlburg’s 1951 Chevrolet had front end damage.

Encephalitis or sleeping sickness has been confirmed in at least three horses in the Chanute area with cases also reported in Salina and Colby.
