In Atlantic City President Johnson urged Democrats to convert wavering voters and rally Republicans. He planned strategy with Hubert Humphrey at the LBJ Ranch and praised building a true national party. Johnson stressed unity, lawful order, and a future-oriented fight for the Great Society.
Washington AP report shows consumer price index up three tenths of one percent in July, the largest monthly rise in a year. Meats, fruits and vegetables led gains, with food up nine tenths of a percent, while meat prices remained 1.4 percent below a year ago. Transportation and medical care each rose two tenths of a percent, housing was unchanged as furnishings and fuels offset higher items.
Atlantic City AP report notes Kansas Democratic delegates wrap up at the national convention with speeches by President Johnson and Sen. Humphrey. They honor retiring National Committeewoman Georgia Neese Gray for 28 years and plan return flights. Theis and Gray stay for a National Committee meeting. Plans discussed for Humphrey visits to Kansas this fall, potential Wichita stop.
Probate court heard yesterday on the charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for Jim Baker 6332 S Malcolm. Evidence was taken under advisement for a later ruling. Baker remains free on a $500 bond. A 14 year old Chanute girl failed to return home overnight. An earlier hearing saw her date plead guilty and serve a week in jail.
Thunderstorm last night knocked out the Chanute Animal Clinic base radio unit at 411 E. Main. Dr. R. A. Cook found smoke in the building during a 2:30 a.m. emergency dog operation. Extent of damage undetermined. no other storm damage reported.

Maynard Sloan, 29, manager of KBLR radio in Kivar Missouri, died Thursday after suffering two heart attacks. Sloan was part of the Neathery-McKenney chain. He had worked at Monett Missouri and Iola Kansas before moving to Bolivar about a year ago.
Eighteen counterfeit Federal Reserve notes totaling 195 dollars have been recovered in Wichita since last week. The bills include 11 five dollar notes and seven 20 dollar notes. Vincent Mroz, special agent in charge of the Kansas City district, says this is the first such find in Wichita and notes they avoid serial number records to prevent counterfeiter manipulation. The Secret Service monitors bills by a letter in the upper right corner.
Hurricane Cleo, after raging from Cuba to Florida, weakened to gentle breezes along the coast. Eyewall winds once hit 138 dead in the Caribbean. Forecasters predicted inland decay near Brunswick, Savannah, and Georgia as hurricane warnings remained up to Charleston. Cape Kennedy reported only minor gusts as Cleo moved northward toward Georgia.
Weather bulletin notes high 78 and low 64 with today’s rainfall 0.04 inch and yesterday 1.39 inches. Area forecast calls for fair conditions, cooler tonight, mid 50s low, near 80 Saturday. Lt. Leonard Robbins of Yates Center and his wife and children faced a rough trip to Alexandria Virginia for a National Guard training school. A car crash damaged the vehicle and exhaustively drained insurance. While traveling home the Robbinses paused at a roadside park where Mrs Robbins fell from an embankment breaking a leg and required air transport from Arlington hospital.
Lyle Fursman purchases the McCune Motor Co. Chrysler dealer in Chanute. McCune will stay as salesman with the new owner, who, with wife Ethel, plans to reside at 1001 S. Tennessee. Fursman, native of Iola, previously lived in Welda and is acquainted with Chrysler Motors Corporation.

A Montpelier stockyard sought $50,000 damages claiming threats of violence. In Iowa, a large NFO-leaning protest disrupted a Waukon live stock auction with 200 attendees and 90 cattle sold. NFO pledges nonviolence while seeking fixed prices in contracts at major markets.
Two people died when a small plane flipped over at the Cessna Aircraft Co landing field in Wichita. Pilot Richard E. Rhoads 31 and test engineer Allen B. Delamar 21 were killed. The craft an experimental Super Sky Wagon rolled as if hit by turbulence near a B52 bomber approaching McConnell Air Force Base. Rhoads and Delamar were Wichita residents.

The city will open bids September 14 for a street widening and paving project seeking to widen 1st Street from Lincoln to Evergreen, Santa Fe east side from 1st to 2nd, and Highland east side from 4th to 5th, plus six blocks of residential paving. Only one bid arrived July 27, above estimate, and was rejected. The meeting also includes a Main Street cost estimate and island parking changes to increase spaces. Highland widening funds come from the school district to ease traffic near the Senior High-Junior College.
Kansas farm employment slipped from 148,700 in June to 142,500 in July while nonagricultural jobs held steady at 684,200, keeping total employment at 826,700, well above 820,100 a year earlier. Manufacturing dipped to 119,200 in July from 119,500 in June, with insured unemployment at 2.2 percent for the week ending August 22, down from 2.3 percent and 2.5 percent a year earlier.
