Shigekatsu Kawamata of Omura in Nagasaki Prefecture claimed a new world record by cutting 204 heads in 48 hours using a manual clipper. He beat Guy Mudd’s 196 in 46 hours 30 minutes, then collapsed from exhaustion and was ordered to rest for two days.
The Rev Loyal Miles, a lawyer turned minister and current pastor in Dodge City since 1965, will take the Wichita based post Sept 1. He succeeds Rev Maurice Gordon who left for the National United Methodist Foundation in Nashville. Kansas foundation, four years old, controls about 3 million dollars in assets and bequests for church projects in Kansas.

Hanoi radio reports North Vietnam freed three U S prisoners after more than a year and pacifist Rennie Davis identifies them. The men are Lt Wesley Lewis Rumble of Oroville California Lt (jg) Robert Franchot Frishman of San Te California and Navy Seaman Douglas Brent Hegdahl of Watertown South Dakota. Davis says they are in excellent condition and Frishman had elbow surgery. They will depart Hanoi Tuesday by ICC pane to Vientiane Laos.
The Machinists Union began a first strike in Beech Aircraft Corp history with pickets at four plants in Kansas and Colorado. Beech employs 10,100, with 6,270 represented by the union including 5,000 in Wichita and other workers in Salina Liberal and Boulder. Non union workers were asked to report for the 7 am shift as later shifts were cut.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development approves a 1.71 million loan for construction of a 100 unit senior apartment building in Parsons Kansas. Senators Pear son and Dole and Representative Shubitz announce the loan to the Parsons Housing Authority for a twin towers project on 18th Street between Belmont and Corning Streets.
