In Nichols Iowa volunteers planned a practice burn of an empty building. They doused it with gasoline and lit a match causing an explosion that shattered most town windows. No firefighters were injured.
President Nixon flew to Camp David in Maryland where he will remain until Wednesday. Cabinet members will join him for dinner tonight, then meet Wednesday morning before Nixon returns to Washington. He will host Kurt Kiesinger at a Thursday dinner and plan meetings Thursday and Friday.
District 413 board approves the 1969 70 school budget without changes. expenditures rise by 288 466.63 to 1 713 015.89. Actions include tabling a full year Head Start decision, hiring five elementary secretaries and two bus drivers, accepting two resignations, and approving bus gas and lunch milk bids. A $12 543 federal OEO grant funds the summer program under possible SEK CAP direction.

The 1969 watermelon season opens Friday in Thayer with Gov. Robert Docking expected to preside. The event includes a queen crowning and a watermelon feed, sponsored by Farm Produce Management and Fruits. Also marking the start are roadside markets selling melons vegetables and fruits.

The Hay Queen pageant will be held at 8 o clock tonight in the Yates Center High School gymnasium with seven contestants vying for the crown. The winner advances to the Miss Kansas pageant at Pratt. Sponsors include Yates Center Jaycees and Jaynes. the 1968 queen Elaine Buttermore and 1967 winner Carol Habiger will conduct the coronation, with Miss Pittsburg State and Miss Garnett as guests.
